BGN ordered two dual-fuel VLGCs from HD Hyundai, expanding its LPG fleet to 19 vessels and supporting maritime decarbonization.
BGN has taken another significant step in expanding its maritime transportation capabilities by signing a new shipbuilding agreement with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) for the construction of two state-of-the-art dual-fuel Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs). The contract, finalized on June 5, reflects the company’s continued commitment to reinforcing its presence in the global liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shipping industry while supporting the transition toward more sustainable marine transportation solutions.
Under the terms of the agreement, the two vessels will be constructed at HD HHI’s advanced shipyard facilities in South Korea. Each carrier will feature a cargo capacity of approximately 93,000 cubic meters, enabling the efficient transportation of large LPG volumes across international markets. The vessels are expected to be delivered by 2029, further enhancing BGN’s operational capacity and long-term logistics capabilities.
This latest order follows BGN’s recent investment in four additional dual-fuel VLGCs, demonstrating a consistent strategy of fleet modernization and expansion. With the addition of these newly commissioned vessels, BGN’s owned LPG VLGC fleet will increase to a total of 19 ships. The growing fleet positions the company among the major participants in the LPG maritime transport sector, strengthening its ability to meet increasing global demand for energy commodities while ensuring reliable and flexible supply chain operations.
The newly ordered carriers will incorporate dual-fuel propulsion technology, allowing them to operate using both conventional marine fuels and lower-emission alternatives. This capability aligns with the evolving environmental requirements of the shipping industry and supports international efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport. By investing in vessels equipped with cleaner fuel technologies, BGN is taking proactive measures to improve fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and enhance the environmental performance of its shipping operations.
In addition to transporting LPG, the vessels are being designed with the capability to carry ammonia, a fuel and commodity that is increasingly viewed as a critical component of future low-carbon energy systems. The ability to transport ammonia provides BGN with greater operational flexibility and positions the company to participate in emerging energy markets linked to decarbonization initiatives. As interest in ammonia as a potential clean fuel and hydrogen carrier continues to grow, the inclusion of this capability underscores BGN’s forward-looking approach to fleet development.
BGN already operates one of the largest combined owned and chartered shipping fleets within its business segment. The company has consistently invested in modern maritime assets to ensure high levels of operational efficiency, safety, and reliability. Through strategic fleet expansion, BGN aims to strengthen global energy supply chains, support the secure movement of essential fuels, and respond effectively to evolving market requirements.
The latest VLGC order also highlights the broader trend within the shipping industry toward investing in technologically advanced vessels capable of meeting stricter environmental standards. As global energy trade volumes continue to rise and sustainability becomes an increasingly important consideration, companies are focusing on modern fleets that can balance commercial performance with environmental responsibility.
By expanding its fleet with these two dual-fuel VLGCs, BGN is reinforcing its long-term growth strategy while contributing to the modernization and decarbonization of maritime transport. The investment reflects confidence in the future of LPG shipping, the growing role of alternative fuels, and the importance of maintaining resilient and efficient global energy transportation networks.
