Biotalys and Syngenta achieve milestone developing protein-based bioinsecticide, showing promising results and advancing sustainable crop protection innovation for farmers worldwide.

Biotalys has announced that it has successfully reached the first significant research milestone in its collaboration with Syngenta, a major player in agricultural innovation. This partnership is focused on the development of a next-generation bioinsecticide aimed at combating some of the most damaging insect pests affecting crops worldwide. The achievement marks an important step forward in the joint effort to create sustainable and effective crop protection solutions.

The milestone was reached following encouraging results from initial laboratory (in vitro) testing. These studies demonstrated that newly developed bioactive compounds, created using Biotalys’ proprietary AGROBODY™ technology, show promising activity against specific molecular targets in insects. This early success provides validation for the scientific approach being used and strengthens confidence in the potential of protein-based biocontrol solutions as viable alternatives to traditional chemical pesticides.

Carlo Boutton, interim CEO of Biotalys, emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing regenerative agricultural practices. He highlighted that Biotalys aims to bridge the gap between conventional crop protection products and environmentally friendly biological solutions. By combining high efficacy with sustainability, the company seeks to address modern agricultural challenges in a balanced way. Boutton also noted that collaborating with an established industry leader like Syngenta significantly accelerates the process of transforming scientific discoveries into practical, field-ready applications.

This milestone is particularly important because it demonstrates the capability of Biotalys’ technology platform to effectively target insect pests. The collaboration is expected to lead to the development of innovative products with unique modes of action. Such solutions can be integrated into existing integrated pest management (IPM) programs, offering farmers more diverse and effective tools to protect their crops. Expanding the range of available pest control options is crucial, especially as traditional pesticides face increasing limitations.

The need for new solutions is becoming more urgent due to rising insect resistance to conventional treatments. At the same time, stricter environmental regulations and growing concerns about ecological impact are limiting the use of many existing chemical products. Farmers are therefore seeking alternatives that remain effective over time while minimizing harm to the environment. Biotalys’ protein-based biocontrol products are designed to meet these needs by providing targeted action against pests while maintaining a strong safety and sustainability profile.

Following this achievement, the collaboration will move into the next phase of research, which involves in vivo testing—evaluating the performance of the active ingredients on living organisms. This stage is critical for determining real-world effectiveness and safety. As part of the agreement, Syngenta will provide Biotalys with a milestone payment, reflecting the progress made so far. Importantly, this payment will support ongoing research efforts without significantly affecting Biotalys’ existing financial resources.

Overall, this milestone represents a meaningful advancement in the development of innovative, sustainable crop protection technologies and reinforces the value of strategic partnerships in accelerating agricultural innovation.
