BioVeritas, a leader in sustainable fuels and biochemicals, announced on October 25 a breakthrough technology called the BioVeritas Process for producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This innovation has the potential to revolutionize the industry by overcoming key limitations that currently hinder SAF production.

BioVeritas, formerly known as Terrabon, has been dedicated to sustainable fuels for over 15 years, predating the widespread adoption of the term SAF. They've made significant advancements, particularly in fermentation and acid recovery, at their Texas demonstration unit.

Key Advantages of BioVeritas Process:

• Unlocks More Feedstocks: BioVeritas' approach utilizes a wider range of readily available resources, from dedicated crops to agricultural waste, for VFA (volatile fatty acid) production - a crucial precursor for SAF.

• Reduced Energy Consumption: The BioVeritas Process boasts a proprietary extraction process and efficient water recycling, minimizing energy-intensive distillation and evaporation steps common in other methods.

• Superior Carbon Intensity: This innovative process delivers SAF with a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to traditional options.

Three-Step Process for Sustainable Aviation Fuel:

1.           Directed Mixed-Culture Fermentation: This step transforms diverse feedstocks into a controlled and adjustable mix of VFAs using a specially designed microbial community.

2.           Low-Energy Acid Recovery: BioVeritas' unique extraction process and water recycling minimize energy consumption needed for VFA separation.

3.           VFA-SAF Conversion: The final stage utilizes established processes to convert longer-chain VFAs into SAF.

The BioVeritas Process addresses critical limitations faced by existing SAF production technologies, such as restricted feedstock availability and high energy demands. This flexibility positions BioVeritas to significantly contribute to the ambitious goals of the SAF Grand Challenge, aimed at increasing SAF production.

To accelerate market entry, BioVeritas has appointed Alan Del Paggio, a seasoned industry leader with over 35 years of experience in biofuels and related technologies, as their Chief Commercial Officer (CCO). His expertise will be instrumental in propelling BioVeritas' growth within the rapidly expanding SAF market.

"Our primary focus," says BioVeritas CEO David Austgen, "is to support the aviation industry's net-zero goals and assist refiners in meeting renewable fuel mandates." He emphasizes that BioVeritas aims to bridge the gap between current and future SAF demand, collaborating with existing producers to create a win-win-win scenario for the aviation industry, the refining industry, and the environment.
