BRB Introduces Low Carbon Footprint Viscosity Modifiers for Sustainable Lubricant Solutions

BRB launches Viscotech® Upcycled, a low-carbon viscosity modifier using re-refined base oils, reducing emissions by 60% and supporting circular economy.

BRB Lube Oil Additives & Chemicals, a leading global producer of lubricant additives and specialty chemicals, has unveiled its new Viscotech® Upcycled portfolio—a groundbreaking range of low-carbon-footprint viscosity modifiers designed to advance sustainability in the lubricant industry. The new line is formulated using high-quality re-refined base oils (RRBO) as an environmentally friendly alternative to virgin base oils.

This innovative solution marks a significant step in the lubricant sector’s transition toward circularity. By integrating recycled base oils into viscosity modifiers, BRB enables their direct use in existing value chains as high-performance, drop-in replacements for standard Viscotech® products. The key differentiator lies in the environmental advantage: products made with RRBO exhibit around 60% lower carbon footprint from cradle to gate compared to those using virgin base oils. Moreover, the use of RRBO helps cut approximately 0.1 kg of CO2 emissions per kilogram of the final oil formulation, directly contributing to Scope 3 emission reductions for end users across the supply chain.

Roger Dohmen, Vice President of BRB Lube Oil Additives & Chemicals, emphasized the strategic significance of this launch, stating: “We are thrilled to introduce the Viscotech® Upcycled range to the market. By using high-quality RRBO in our viscosity modifiers, we are not only maintaining product performance at the same level as virgin base oil-based solutions but also delivering real progress in sustainability. RRBOs are no longer a compromise—they are a strategic enabler for lowering carbon footprints across our products and value chains.”

As part of PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG), BRB operates under the company’s Specialty Chemicals Division, which is committed to driving climate action in alignment with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C global warming target. The new Viscotech® Upcycled portfolio reinforces this ambition, showcasing how innovation in specialty chemicals can support decarbonization efforts while maintaining performance excellence.

Dohmen further highlighted BRB’s long-term vision: “Over the years, we’ve made consistent progress in developing premium formulations using re-refined base oils. Our focus on high-quality RRBO-based solutions reflects a strategic move toward reducing climate impact. We invite our partners and customers to join us in this transition toward a circular economy, where sustainable materials are central to performance and innovation.”

With the launch of Viscotech® Upcycled, BRB strengthens its position as an industry leader championing low-carbon, high-performance lubricant additives. The company’s continued investment in sustainable chemistry underscores its mission to deliver solutions that align with both customer needs and global environmental goals.
