Massport facilities, including Logan Airport and Conley Terminal, to switch to 100% renewable diesel by 2025 in a significant stride towards reducing carbon emissions.
Broco Energy, a prominent energy provider and a recognized leader in clean energy solutions across New England, announced on July 18, a groundbreaking partnership with the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport). This collaboration signifies a monumental stride in Massport's unwavering commitment to significantly reducing its carbon footprint and championing environmental stewardship throughout the Commonwealth. The core of this initiative involves the transition of Massport's extensive network of fuel tanks to 100% renewable diesel, marking a pivotal moment in the region's clean energy transition.
Starting in 2025, Broco Energy will strategically implement the full conversion to renewable diesel at several critical Massport facilities. This includes high-profile locations such as Conley Terminal, Boston Logan International Airport, Hanscom Air Force Base, Worcester Regional Airport, and other vital Massport operational sites. This comprehensive shift underscores Massport's dedication to adopting cutting-edge carbon reduction solutions across its diverse portfolio of operations.
Renewable diesel, a meticulously engineered, cleaner-burning fuel, is derived from sustainable and renewable sources, such as waste fats, oils, and greases. Its adoption offers a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when compared to traditional petroleum diesel. Unlike biodiesel, renewable diesel is chemically identical to petroleum diesel, making it a "drop-in" fuel that requires no modifications to existing diesel engines or infrastructure.
Robert Brown, President of Broco Energy, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "We are truly honored to partner with Massport on this vital initiative. As a company deeply committed to advancing clean energy in New England, we've been diligently preparing for this." Brown highlighted Broco Energy's proactive approach, building on a successful pilot program initiated in January 2024. During this period, Broco Energy worked closely with Massport's Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and made significant investments in facility upgrades, specifically enabling the ability to injection blend renewable diesel. "This careful preparation, combined with our unique fixed storage and blending capabilities, allows us to provide a seamless and efficient transition for Massport," Brown added.
This partnership is expected to yield significant environmental benefits. The initiative aligns perfectly with Massport's broader environmental goals, including its ambitious "Roadmap to NetZero" plan, which aims to achieve net-zero status by 2031. The move to renewable diesel will play a crucial role in reaching these targets by substantially lowering the carbon intensity of their fuel consumption.
