Both nations expressed a strong commitment to enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and energy, eyeing significant future collaborations.
Canada recently hosted the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during a pivotal visit to Canada from June 19 to 20, 2025. This high-profile engagement served to emphatically reaffirm the shared commitment of both nations to deepen bilateral cooperation across a broad spectrum of areas, including trade, energy, innovation, people-to-people ties, international development, and regional peace and security.
A significant portion of the discussions was dedicated to Energy and Natural Resources. Canada and the UAE reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing energy security and accelerating a just transition towards a low-carbon economy. Canada specifically welcomed the UAE’s expressed interest in formalizing energy collaboration, acknowledging the UAE’s pioneering efforts in the energy sphere and its role in promoting greater international energy collaboration. Canada also articulated its support for continued dialogue on joint initiatives focused on decarbonization, liquified natural gas (LNG), nuclear energy, hydrogen, and critical mineral value chains.
In this context, both nations underscored their dedication to building upon existing ties in energy and critical energy-transition minerals, with a renewed focus on promoting investment opportunities and enhancing mutual investment attraction. This strategic alignment promises to unlock significant potential for growth and innovation in the global energy landscape.
Both countries also acknowledged the indispensable role played by the Canada-UAE Business Council. This council serves as a crucial forum for bringing together business leaders from both nations. Building on robust institutional partnerships—exemplified by the global collaboration between Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and DP World across 15 ports and logistics parks—Canada and the UAE expressed their firm intent to pursue new avenues for strategic investment and long-term economic engagement.
A key highlight of the visit was the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister of UAE, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney. Their discussions underscored the rapidly growing ties between Canada and the UAE. In a significant diplomatic gesture, Sheikh Abdullah, on behalf of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, extended a formal invitation to Prime Minister Carney to visit the UAE later this year, signaling a mutual desire for continued high-level dialogue and collaboration.
Economic discussions were further advanced during a business roundtable co-led by Maninder Sidhu, Canada’s Minister of International Trade and Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, on June 19, 2025. Organized by the Canada-UAE Business Council, the event brought together key stakeholders to explore synergistic opportunities.
