Canada has announced a one-year extension of the Ukraine Goods Remission Order until June 9, allowing Ukrainian goods to continue entering the Canadian market tariff-free. François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, made the announcement on June 6, building on the unanimous reaffirmation of support for Ukraine by G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors last month in Banff, Alberta.

This extension underscores Canada's unwavering commitment to Ukraine's economic stability and its fight to defend sovereignty, territorial integrity, and democracy against the ongoing conflict initiated by Russia, with support from Belarus. The conflict has severely impacted Ukraine's economy, particularly its ability to export goods globally.

"Canada reaffirmed its support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, including through military, financial, and humanitarian aid. Today’s announcement reinforces that commitment by helping sustain Ukraine’s economy and demonstrates Canada’s resolve to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes,” stated Minister Champagne.

The Ukraine Goods Remission Order, initially implemented on June 9, 2022, has been extended annually since its inception. This measure temporarily remits customs duties applicable to imports of Ukrainian goods, providing crucial economic relief. Since its introduction, Canada has imported over $35 million in goods from Ukraine under this order, resulting in approximately $8.5 million in remitted customs duties. The latest extension is projected to generate an additional $1.2 million in duties remitted between June 10, 2025, and June 9, 2026.

This Canadian initiative aligns with similar efforts by key international partners. The European Union and the United Kingdom have also extended their unilateral suspension of tariffs on goods from Ukraine. Notably, the UK imports a significant amount of cereals, including wheat, maize, barley, and rice, from Ukraine.

Beyond tariff relief, Canada has provided substantial multifaceted support to Ukraine since January 2022, committing over $8 billion. This comprehensive aid package encompasses financial, humanitarian, development, military, peace, and stabilization assistance, alongside immigration measures for Ukrainians displaced by the invasion. The continued tariff-free access for Ukrainian goods is a vital component of this broader support, aiming to bolster Ukraine's export capacity and economic resilience during these challenging times.
