Century Lithium Corp’s Angel Island lithium carbonate has been successfully converted into high-quality, battery-grade lithium-metal anodes by Alpha-En Corporation.

Century Lithium Corp. announced a pivotal advancement in the domestic battery materials landscape, reporting the successful conversion of its Angel Island lithium carbonate into high-performance, battery-grade lithium-metal anodes (Li-MA) by Alpha-En Corporation.

The collaboration saw Alpha-En Corporation, a New York-based innovator, utilize its patented room-temperature conversion process to transform lithium carbonate sourced from Century Lithium's wholly-owned Angel Island project in Esmeralda County, Nevada. The lithium carbonate was derived from the company's associated Demonstration Plant in Nye County, Nevada, showcasing the integrated capabilities of Century Lithium's operations.

"We are immensely proud that Century Lithium was chosen as a domestic source of lithium for Alpha-En's pioneering program to produce lithium-metal anodes," stated Bill Willoughby, President and CEO of Century Lithium. "This partnership not only validates the exceptional quality of our material but also highlights the strength of our technical expertise. We are committed to fostering innovation and supporting the growth of the entire US battery materials supply chain."

A sample of 99.8% pure lithium carbonate from Angel Island was provided to Alpha-En. The subsequent conversion process yielded Li-MA demonstrating impressive characteristics, including high areal capacity and extraction efficiency. Crucially, in pilot tests, the material derived from Century Lithium's Angel Island project surpassed the performance and quality benchmarks of battery-grade lithium carbonate obtained from a commercial non-domestic source, signaling a significant competitive advantage for domestic production.

Landon Oakes, Chief Technology Officer of Alpha-En Corporation, expressed strong satisfaction with the results. "The performance of the lithium metal produced from Century Lithium’s lithium carbonate has been truly outstanding. Its inherent purity and consistency directly translated into the production of high-quality lithium-metal anodes," Oakes commented. "We eagerly anticipate continued collaboration with Century Lithium as they propel the Angel Island project forward."

Century Lithium continues to advance the Angel Island project through ongoing permitting, detailed engineering, and further technical development at its Demonstration Plant. The company maintains a steadfastly positive long-term outlook on the critical role lithium-based batteries are set to play in the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) and stationary energy storage markets. This successful collaboration with Alpha-En further solidifies Century Lithium's position as a key player in the evolving landscape of sustainable energy and looks forward to further supporting Alpha-En's endeavors to establish a robust domestic lithium supply chain. The ability to produce high-quality lithium-metal anodes from domestically sourced lithium carbonate represents a significant step towards energy independence and technological leadership in the battery sector for the United States.
