China and India LNG Uptick: Demand Climbs 2% as Asian Buying Returns

Asia's demand for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) increased in the week ending January 30. The increase in LNG demand in Asia stemmed from improvements in market sentiment, with China and India both showing modest increases. The two countries showed caution when returning to the market due to expectations of less strained global supply chains, lower than expected global prices for LNG, and an increase in the amount of LNG being produced globally. In China, demand for LNG was driven by increased demand for electricity and urban gas, as well as interest in launching the yuan-denominated futures contracts for LNG. Demand for LNG in India was driven by fertiliser, city gas, refining and power generation; however, price sensitivity was still an issue. The improvement in LNG demand in both markets of approximately 2% overall confirms that these two markets are major influencers of the overall growth of LNG globally.

The liquefied natural gas (LNG) market in Asia saw a strong rise in demand throughout the week of xxth January, due to increased demand for LNG in China and India as supply concerns eased, as well as an improved global gas market outlook. After a time of hesitation in making purchases, importers responded to improved market balance expectations, favourable policy signals and improving downstream consumption trends in both nations.

In China, there was an indication of greater stability over time about demand conditions as utilities and traders had anticipated that international prices will ease and that there will be a greater availability of LNG cargo on the market. The forecasted loose global supply and demand balance of the world’s supplies of natural gas due to steady growth in production and the number of new liquefaction projects coming on stream supported this improvement...
