n-heptane demand across China’s downstream cleaning, paints and coatings sectors remained supported in August by improving new-energy-vehicle activity. Wholesale NEV sales reached an estimated 1.51 million units, up 16.0% year-on-year and 4.0% month-on-month. This recovery supported solvent consumption, although seasonal softness, elevated inventories and cautious macroeconomic spending limited procurement momentum. Buyers largely focused on immediate production requirements rather than building substantial inventories.
The paint and coatings sector continued to show restrained purchasing, while semiconductor clean-solvent consumption provided moderate support. Pharmaceutical demand remained steady, helping maintain a stable consumption base for n-heptane. Overall buying sentiment improved toward the end of August as overseas and domestic participants began preparing for forthcoming holiday-related logistics disruptions.
n-heptane supply conditions tightened toward the transition into September. n-heptane inventories remained low, making inexpensive parcels increasingly difficult to locate. Traders raised offers and showed limited willingness to sell below prevailing levels as inventories gradually declined.
Feedstock economics also supported the upward price movement. Naphtha prices remained firm amid elevated geopolitical risks, while Brent crude increased 2.6% during the week as tensions between Iran and the United States intensified. Concerns surrounding attacks on energy infrastructure and maritime transport continued to influence crude markets, raising the potential for higher production costs across the petrochemical chain including n-heptane.
The July attack on the Jizan Refinery, with approximately 400,000 barrels per day of crude-processing capacity, also affected regional oil flows. No exports were reported from the refinery during August, adding to concerns over regional supply disruptions. Analysts have consequently revised some oil-price expectations upward, with the possibility that Middle East tensions could persist into 2027.
According to ChemAnalyst data, n-heptane prices likely to increase as overseas buyers are expected to increase procurement ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, particularly to secure prompt cargoes before potential logistics disruptions. This restocking activity may provide additional support to n-heptane prices, while stronger shipment commitments could gradually reduce readily available inventories. n-heptane prices are likely to remain supported in the near term as holiday restocking, declining social inventories and firm naphtha costs provide upward pressure.
