At the end of August, AM Green Ammonia placed India’s largest electrolyser order, a 1.3 GW contract with John Cockerill, for the first phase of a green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. This facility, expected to produce one million tonnes of green ammonia annually, is scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2026. The project will involve the production of green hydrogen, which will then be converted into green ammonia, a significant step towards India's ambitious decarbonization goals and net-zero emissions targets.

The Kakinada plant is a key component of AM Green’s broader goal to achieve five million tonnes of green ammonia production per year by 2030. This is part of India’s drive to boost its green hydrogen capabilities and meet both domestic energy needs and international objectives, particularly within Europe. Green ammonia is seen as a crucial element in the hydrogen economy, and its production from renewable energy sources will help decarbonize a range of industries, including agriculture, transportation, and manufacturing.

John Cockerill’s role in this project marks a significant step in the expansion of its hydrogen business. The company’s advanced electrolysis technology, coupled with renewable energy solutions, is central to the success of the Kakinada facility. This technology will not only produce the required green hydrogen but also play a pivotal role in accelerating the adoption of green hydrogen and its derivatives across India and globally. By providing large-scale technological solutions, John Cockerill aims to help achieve sustainable decarbonization, with its hydrogen technology helping to drive economic transition in key sectors.

As part of its expansion strategy, John Cockerill is also strengthening its presence in India. The growing local demand for hydrogen, particularly in industries like steel and energy, presents an opportunity for the company to capture a larger share of the Indian market. India’s transition to clean energy is accelerating, and John Cockerill is well-positioned to contribute to this shift through its innovative hydrogen production technologies.

Credendo, a major player in the financial backing of green projects, is supporting John Cockerill through its Credendo Green Package. This partnership aims to foster the adoption of green ammonia and hydrogen technologies, contributing to a more sustainable global energy landscape. Credendo’s involvement is a significant part of ensuring that this green ammonia project, along with others like it, helps to meet the global climate goals of reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.

This collaboration reflects the growing momentum in India and beyond for large-scale green hydrogen projects, paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future. By focusing on green hydrogen and ammonia production, India is not only working toward achieving its net-zero targets but also reinforcing its position as a leader in the global clean energy transition.
