EIL secures a $350+ million contract to expand Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery, reinforcing global engineering leadership and Africa’s energy self-sufficiency.

In a major milestone for India’s engineering and project consultancy industry, Engineers India Limited (EIL) has secured a landmark overseas contract valued at more than USD 350 million (approximately Rs. 3,174.83 crore). The contract has been awarded by Nigeria’s industrial conglomerate, Dangote Group, for the large-scale expansion of the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Complex located in Lagos, Nigeria.

Under the terms of the agreement, EIL will deliver comprehensive Project Management Consultancy (PMC) along with Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) services. These services will support one of the most ambitious refinery expansion projects ever undertaken globally, further strengthening EIL’s reputation as a trusted partner for mega energy infrastructure developments.

The expansion project targets the already operational Dangote Refinery, which currently holds the distinction of being Africa’s largest refinery and the world’s biggest single-train refining facility. With an existing crude processing capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd), the refinery has played a transformative role in reshaping Nigeria’s downstream energy sector since its commissioning in 2024.

The new expansion phase aims to elevate the facility to an unprecedented scale. Once completed, the refinery’s total processing capacity is expected to rise to nearly 1.4 million barrels per day, effectively more than doubling its current throughput. This will make it the largest petroleum refining complex in the world operating at a single location.

Beyond crude processing, the project includes substantial enhancements to the petrochemical segment. Polypropylene production capacity will be expanded significantly from the current 830 kilo-tonnes per annum (kTPA) to approximately 2.4 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA). To support this increase, a new 750 kTPA Oleflex unit will be installed, providing a dedicated propylene feedstock stream and strengthening the complex’s integrated petrochemical capabilities.

The expanded facility will also be designed to produce higher-grade, environmentally compliant Euro-VI fuels, aligning the project with evolving global emissions standards and sustainability benchmarks. This focus on advanced fuel quality reinforces Dangote Group’s long-term vision of creating a world-class, future-ready refining and petrochemical hub.

The award of this contract further underscores the deep-rooted partnership between EIL and Dangote Group. EIL previously acted as the PMC and EPCM consultant for the initial phase of the Dangote Refinery, a project widely regarded as a cornerstone for Africa’s energy security and industrial self-reliance. According to a statement released by a public sector unit under India’s Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Dangote Group’s renewed engagement reflects strong confidence in EIL’s engineering expertise and project execution capabilities.

Strategically, the expansion aligns closely with Nigeria’s objective of emerging as a regional hub for refined petroleum products and petrochemicals. By significantly reducing dependence on imported fuels, the project is expected to improve trade balances, enhance supply stability, and support broader industrial development across West Africa.

For Engineers India Limited, this contract represents not only a major commercial win but also a powerful endorsement of India’s global engineering capabilities. It highlights EIL’s ability to manage complex, high-value energy projects and reinforces its growing footprint in international markets.
