Enbridge advances two gas projects—AGT Enhancement and Eiger Express—to strengthen U.S. supply reliability and support growing Gulf Coast LNG exports.
Enbridge Inc., a leading North American energy infrastructure company, has announced its final investment decisions on two significant gas transmission projects aimed at supporting the rising demand for natural gas in the United States. These initiatives include the Algonquin Reliable Affordable Resilient Enhancement project (AGT Enhancement) in the U.S. Northeast and the Eiger Express Pipeline (Eiger) through the Matterhorn joint venture.
The AGT Enhancement project is specifically designed to improve the reliability, affordability, and accessibility of natural gas for existing Local Distribution Company (LDC) customers in the U.S. Northeast. Natural gas remains a critical part of the region’s energy mix, especially during peak winter months when demand surges and price volatility is common. Once operational, the project will deliver an incremental 75 million cubic feet per day (Mmcf/d) of natural gas under long-term agreements with high-credit-grade counterparties. Enbridge has allocated approximately US$0.3 billion for system upgrades, primarily within existing or adjacent rights-of-way, minimizing disruption and ensuring cost-effectiveness. Pending timely regulatory and governmental approvals, AGT Enhancement is scheduled for completion in 2029.
On the other hand, the Eiger Express Pipeline reflects Enbridge’s strategy of expanding its reach to the growing liquefied natural gas (LNG) export market along the U.S. Gulf Coast. The project involves constructing a 42-inch, 450-mile-long pipeline capable of transporting up to 2.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas from the prolific Permian Basin in West Texas to the Katy area. This area is a strategic hub with connections to major storage facilities and LNG export terminals. Upon its expected completion in 2028, Enbridge anticipates holding a significant equity interest in up to 10 Bcf/d of long-haul Permian Basin egress pipeline capacity. This complements the company’s existing Whistler Parent joint venture assets and is supported by long-term contracts with primarily investment-grade customers, ensuring financial stability and reliability.
Cynthia Hansen, Executive Vice President and President of Gas Transmission at Enbridge, emphasized that these projects underscore the company’s ability to deliver on the $23 billion of gas transmission opportunities outlined at its Investor Day in March 2025. “Today’s announcements highlight the advantages of Enbridge’s scale and demonstrate our commitment to meeting natural gas demand in the U.S. Northeast and supporting LNG export growth from the Gulf Coast,” Hansen noted. She further explained that these developments strengthen Enbridge’s growth trajectory through the end of the decade, adding visibility and long-term value for stakeholders.
Together, the AGT Enhancement and Eiger Express Pipeline projects represent Enbridge’s dual focus: ensuring reliable domestic energy supply for U.S. households and industries, while also advancing the country’s role as a key exporter of LNG to international markets.
