Entergy Texas gets approval for two gas plants, adding 1,200 MW, creating jobs, boosting reliability, and supporting regional growth.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) has granted approval for Entergy Texas to construct two state-of-the-art natural gas power plants, marking a significant milestone in the region’s energy development. These new facilities are designed to deliver reliable electricity sufficient to power over 300,000 homes, directly addressing the growing energy demands of Southeast Texas. The move underscores Entergy Texas’ commitment to supporting the rapid population and economic growth in its service areas.

The two power plants, named Legend and Lone Star, will collectively add more than 1,200 megawatts of modern, cost-effective, and continuous energy to the regional grid. Beyond meeting rising customer demand, the projects are expected to enhance overall grid reliability while helping reduce electricity costs for all consumers. Additionally, the construction and operation of these plants are anticipated to generate significant economic benefits for the region, including roughly $2.8 billion in economic activity and more than 9,000 construction jobs across the Port Arthur and Cleveland areas. Both facilities are scheduled to commence operations by mid-2028.

Eliecer Viamontes, CEO of Entergy Texas, emphasized the importance of these projects in meeting the needs of both residents and businesses. “Our customers and communities have consistently highlighted the need for more power to support Southeast Texas’ rapid growth. These new facilities will deliver exactly that,” Viamontes said. “From families and local businesses to schools and critical public services, these power plants enhance our ability to provide reliable energy to everyone who depends on us daily. They also reflect the remarkable growth in our service territory and our ongoing commitment to proactively support it.”

Legend Power Station

  • Located in Port Arthur, Texas
  • Capable of supplying electricity to approximately 190,000 homes
  • Estimated to generate $1.79 billion in regional economic activity during construction
  • $1.6 billion capital investment

Lone Star Power Station

  • Located near Cleveland, Texas
  • Capable of powering over 110,000 homes
  • Expected to produce $951 million in economic activity during construction
  • $799 million investment

These projects are integral to Entergy Texas’ broader Southeast Texas Energy Plan, known as STEP Ahead. This long-term initiative aims to support economic development, enhance system reliability, and meet the energy needs of rapidly expanding communities. Portions of Entergy Texas’ service area are among the fastest-growing in the nation. By adding more than 1.2 gigawatts of additional generation capacity by 2028, alongside the ongoing Orange County Advanced Power Station, Entergy Texas is advancing its mission to provide affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy to customers and communities across Southeast Texas.
