EnviTec Biogas expands in Slovakia with second biomethane project, boosting renewable gas production capacity and supporting regional decarbonization efforts and sustainability goals.
EnviTec Biogas has successfully completed its second biomethane upgrading project in Slovakia, marking an important milestone with the first gas feed-in from a 417 Nm³/h EnviThan upgrading system. This development reflects the company’s continued expansion in the European renewable energy sector, particularly in biomethane production.
The facility is situated in the municipality of Oždany and is operated by CITA VIA s.r.o.. At present, the plant processes approximately 750 Nm³/h of raw biogas, converting it into biomethane suitable for grid injection or other applications. Looking ahead, the operators aim to significantly scale up production capacity, with long-term plans to reach as much as 1,300 Nm³/h of biogas input. This expansion underscores both the technical flexibility of the system and the growing demand for renewable gas solutions.
The original biogas plant at the site has been operational for around 14 years. It has traditionally relied on agricultural feedstocks such as maize, cattle straw manure, and poultry waste. With the integration of the new upgrading unit, the facility can now produce advanced biomethane while continuing to generate electricity. Notably, the project signals a gradual shift toward more sustainable inputs, as there are plans to move entirely toward waste-based raw materials in the future, reducing reliance on energy crops like maize.
According to Stefan Laumann, head of gas upgrading at EnviTec Biogas, the decision to collaborate on this project was driven by the system’s efficiency and operational flexibility. The EnviThan upgrading technology is membrane-based and was manufactured at the company’s facility in Saerbeck. Before being shipped, the system underwent a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), ensuring that it met performance standards and enabling a smoother and faster commissioning process once installed on-site. Post-installation support is being handled by EnviTec’s regional subsidiary located in Velké Mezirící, ensuring ongoing maintenance and operational reliability.
This project aligns with broader national and regional goals. Slovakia is actively working to expand its renewable energy capacity, supported by approximately €103 million in funding from the European Union’s recovery initiatives. These investments are expected to accelerate the development of clean energy infrastructure, including biomethane facilities.
Research conducted by Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action indicates that Slovakia has around 34 existing biogas plants with the potential to upgrade to biomethane production. This highlights a substantial opportunity for growth in the sector. Meanwhile, neighboring Czech Republic is also pursuing biomethane as a viable substitute for natural gas, integrating it into its broader decarbonization strategy. EnviTec’s presence in the region positions it well to contribute to this transition.
Overall, the completion of this second upgrading project not only strengthens EnviTec Biogas’s footprint in Central Europe but also reflects the increasing momentum behind biomethane as a sustainable energy alternative.
