FMC and Corteva partner to expand rimisoxafen herbicide access, providing farmers advanced dual-action solutions against resistant weeds across the Americas.
FMC Corporation and Corteva, two of the world’s leading agricultural science and innovation companies, have entered into a strategic co-exclusive supply and licensing agreement aimed at expanding the availability of FMC’s revolutionary rimisoxafen herbicide technology across corn and soybean markets in North and South America. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in helping farmers combat the increasing challenge of herbicide-resistant weeds while strengthening the crop protection portfolios of both organizations.
The agreement will allow a larger number of growers throughout the Americas to benefit from rimisoxafen, a next-generation herbicide technology recognized for its unique dual mode of action. The technology offers a highly effective solution against resistant broadleaf weeds, particularly Amaranthus species such as palmer amaranth and waterhemp, which have become some of the most difficult weeds to control in soybean and corn cultivation. These resistant weeds have caused major agricultural challenges worldwide, reducing crop productivity and resulting in billions of dollars in economic losses for farmers due to lower yields and increased weed management expenses.
Leonardo Bastos, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of FMC, highlighted the importance of the partnership by emphasizing that rimisoxafen represents one of the most significant herbicide innovations introduced in several decades. He stated that by joining forces with Corteva, FMC will be able to extend the reach of this advanced technology, ensuring more farmers gain access to effective tools for managing resistant weed populations that threaten agricultural productivity and profitability.
Bastos further explained that the collaboration aligns with FMC’s broader strategy of maximizing the global potential of rimisoxafen. While the agreement focuses on corn and soybean applications in the Americas, FMC will continue to pursue the development of additional rimisoxafen-based products for other crops and international markets. The company views this innovative molecule as a key component of its long-term research and development pipeline and a foundation for future crop protection solutions.
Under the terms of the long-term agreement, which will remain in effect through the next decade, FMC will maintain full ownership rights over rimisoxafen and will supply the active ingredient to Corteva. Both companies will independently formulate, develop, and commercialize their own exclusive premixed herbicide products containing rimisoxafen for use in corn and soybean production across North and South America. As part of the arrangement, Corteva will make an initial pre-purchase payment of approximately $200 million to FMC for future product supplies.
Corteva’s Vice President of the Weed Control Segment, Cynthia Ericson, described the partnership as an important opportunity to enhance the company’s ability to deliver advanced weed management solutions to farmers. She noted that the agreement supports Corteva’s long-term strategy of establishing strategic collaborations that create greater value for growers. The partnership also provides Corteva with a promising growth opportunity and strengthens its crop protection business beyond its existing pipeline of products expected to be introduced over the coming years.
One of the key advantages of rimisoxafen is its dual mode of action, which creates a much stronger defense against the development of herbicide resistance compared with traditional herbicides that rely on a single mode of action. This characteristic makes it an essential tool for sustainable weed management and helps farmers preserve crop performance over the long term.
The Herbicide Resistance Action Committee has classified rimisoxafen as the industry’s first dual mode of action herbicide, recognizing its ability to effectively control problematic broadleaf weeds that significantly impact crop yields and farm profitability. Subject to successful regulatory approvals, the first commercial sales of rimisoxafen-based products are expected to begin by the end of the decade.
Through this strategic partnership, FMC and Corteva are demonstrating their commitment to delivering innovative, durable, and sustainable agricultural solutions. The collaboration is expected to accelerate the adoption of next-generation herbicide technologies, provide farmers with more effective options for resistant weed control, and contribute to improved productivity in corn and soybean farming across the Americas.
