Grasim and Lubrizol inaugurated a 50,000 MTPA CPVC resin facility in Gujarat, enhancing domestic supply and supporting infrastructure growth.

Grasim Industries Limited, the flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, in collaboration with Lubrizol Advanced Materials, has officially inaugurated the first phase of its cutting-edge Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) resin manufacturing plant at the company’s integrated chlor-alkali complex located in Vilayat, Gujarat, India. The newly commissioned facility has an initial annual production capacity of 50,000 metric tons and marks a significant step toward strengthening India’s domestic capabilities in the production of high-performance CPVC resin.

The establishment of this advanced manufacturing facility represents a strategic milestone for India’s specialty chemical and polymer industry. CPVC resin is a critical raw material extensively used in applications such as hot and cold water plumbing systems, water management infrastructure, fire sprinkler networks, and various industrial piping solutions. With increasing urbanization, rapid infrastructure development, and rising demand for durable and corrosion-resistant piping materials, the consumption of CPVC products has witnessed consistent growth in India and several global markets.

The partnership between Grasim Industries and Lubrizol combines Grasim’s extensive manufacturing expertise, strong operational capabilities, and integrated chemical infrastructure with Lubrizol’s advanced CPVC technology and global experience in specialty material development. This collaboration aims to create a reliable and high-quality domestic source of CPVC resin, reducing dependence on imports and strengthening supply chain resilience for manufacturers of CPVC pipes and fittings.

The Vilayat facility has been designed with advanced production technologies and efficient operational systems to ensure consistent quality, improved process efficiency, and sustainable manufacturing practices. The project also aligns with India’s broader objective of promoting local manufacturing, enhancing industrial self-reliance, and developing world-class chemical production capabilities within the country.

Speaking on the inauguration, Mr. Jayant V. Dhobley, Business Head and CEO – Global Chemicals at Aditya Birla Group, emphasized that the project reflects the strength of combining Grasim’s execution excellence and manufacturing capabilities with Lubrizol’s latest technological expertise. He stated that the collaboration demonstrates the company’s strategy of building scalable chemical manufacturing capacities through partnerships that deliver reliable CPVC materials to the market.

The commissioning of the Phase 1 plant is expected to provide substantial support to the rapidly expanding construction and infrastructure sectors. India’s growing investments in residential housing, commercial complexes, smart cities, sanitation systems, and industrial facilities are expected to significantly increase the demand for advanced piping materials. CPVC has emerged as a preferred alternative to conventional materials because of its superior temperature resistance, excellent chemical durability, long service life, and lower maintenance requirements.

The new production capacity is also likely to benefit downstream manufacturers by ensuring greater availability of high-quality CPVC resin within India. A stable domestic supply can help reduce procurement challenges, minimize exposure to international supply disruptions, and improve cost competitiveness for local pipe and fitting producers. Moreover, the availability of locally manufactured CPVC resin may encourage further investments in downstream processing industries and support the overall expansion of India’s polymer value chain.

Looking ahead, this facility represents only the first phase of Grasim and Lubrizol’s broader vision to establish a robust CPVC manufacturing ecosystem in India. As market demand continues to rise, future capacity expansions and technological advancements could further strengthen India’s position as a major producer and supplier of CPVC materials in both domestic and international markets.

Future Impact on CPVC Product Market:

The commissioning of this CPVC resin plant is expected to have a positive long-term impact on the CPVC products market. Increased domestic resin availability may lead to improved supply security and potentially more stable pricing for CPVC pipes, fittings, and related products. The reduced dependence on imported CPVC resin will enable Indian manufacturers to respond more efficiently to growing demand from housing, commercial construction, water distribution, and fire protection sectors.

In the coming years, the expansion of local CPVC production is likely to accelerate adoption of CPVC-based piping systems due to improved accessibility and competitive manufacturing costs. The development may also stimulate innovation, encourage investments in downstream CPVC product manufacturing, and strengthen India’s role as a key hub for CPVC production and exports. Overall, the announcement is expected to support sustained growth in the CPVC industry, driven by increasing infrastructure investments and the rising preference for durable, high-performance piping materials.
