Greenergy extends its Amsterdam lease, expanding biodiesel production capacity, aligning with Dutch biofuel mandates, and strengthening Europe’s renewable energy future.
Greenergy, a leading European producer of biodiesel derived from waste materials, has reinforced its long-term commitment to the Netherlands by extending its lease agreement with the Port of Amsterdam for another ten years. This decision not only secures the company’s operational presence at one of Europe’s busiest ports but also underlines its strategic focus on renewable energy and waste-based fuel production.
Since taking over the Amsterdam biodiesel facility in 2018, Greenergy has undertaken substantial investments to modernize and upgrade the plant. One of the key transformations involved converting the site to process a wider variety of waste oils, a move that aligns with the global push toward sustainable energy and circular economy practices. The most recent expansion works, completed in 2024, boosted production capacity by 25%. This upgrade has enabled the plant to handle a greater spectrum of waste-based feedstocks, helping to address rising demand for renewable fuels across Europe.
The company’s efforts are well aligned with the Dutch Government’s progressive energy policies. The Netherlands has been proactive in promoting renewable fuels as part of its climate agenda. Over the next five years, the government has laid out a clear roadmap to increase official biofuel mandates, which determine the proportion of biofuels that can be blended with conventional diesel and petrol. This policy direction ensures steady market demand and gives producers like Greenergy the confidence to expand operations and commit to long-term investments.
Adam Traeger, CEO of Greenergy, emphasized that the extended lease signifies more than just operational continuity. He highlighted it as a demonstration of the company’s confidence in the Netherlands’ policy framework and its dedication to sustainable fuel production. Traeger noted that while some neighboring countries remain cautious in their approach, the Netherlands has set ambitious targets for increasing biofuel blending levels. With this certainty, Greenergy is well-positioned to contribute significantly to decarbonizing European transport by delivering sustainable, waste-based biodiesel.
The Port of Amsterdam also welcomed the development. Koen Overtoom, CEO of the Port, expressed pride in the extended collaboration, describing it as a step forward in the port’s ambition to become a central hub for renewable fuels in Europe. He noted that the lease extension supports both partners’ shared goals of reducing CO2 emissions and fostering innovation in sustainable energy. According to Overtoom, the partnership will enable Greenergy to maximize the benefits of its advanced facilities and the port’s robust infrastructure, thereby strengthening Amsterdam’s role in Europe’s renewable energy landscape.
