Hanwha Shipping orders advanced LNG carrier to revive U.S. shipbuilding, enhance energy security, and expand domestic maritime industrial capacity.
Hanwha Shipping, a U.S.-based subsidiary of Hanwha Ocean, has placed an order for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier with its affiliate, Hanwha Philly Shipyard. This marks the first time in nearly half a century that a U.S.-ordered LNG carrier intended for the export market is being built—reviving a sector that has remained dormant since the late 1970s. The vessel will feature cutting-edge propulsion systems and modern technology and reflects Hanwha’s broader strategy to transfer its extensive LNG shipbuilding expertise from South Korea to the United States.
The contract includes one firm LNG carrier order and an option for an additional vessel. This initiative is a pivotal step in strengthening America’s shipbuilding capabilities while aligning with recent U.S. policies that encourage a larger share of LNG exports to be transported aboard U.S.-flagged ships operated by American crews. These vessels will meet stringent U.S. Coast Guard requirements and mark a strategic effort to enhance domestic maritime infrastructure.
Ryan Lynch, President and CEO of Hanwha Shipping, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We’re proud to bring Hanwha’s world-class shipbuilding capabilities to the U.S., helping American partners develop the expertise needed to produce next-generation LNG carriers.” He emphasized Hanwha Ocean’s leadership, having recently become the first shipbuilder in the world to deliver its 200th LNG carrier—an achievement that reinforces the company's global dominance in the LNG vessel sector.
The project follows a unique joint-build model. Hanwha Philly Shipyard will lead the contract with Hanwha Shipping and collaborate closely with Hanwha Ocean to deliver the vessel. While core construction will take place at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje facility in South Korea, the U.S. shipyard will oversee compliance with American regulations, certifications, and integration processes. This hybrid approach allows for an effective transfer of advanced shipbuilding knowledge to Hanwha Philly Shipyard, gradually enabling it to handle high-value ship construction on its own.
This LNG carrier order is not just about building ships; it's a strategic move to boost the U.S. maritime industry. By investing in workforce training, smart manufacturing technologies, and infrastructure, Hanwha aims to significantly increase Philly Shipyard’s production capacity. This initiative is expected to create thousands of skilled jobs and invigorate the U.S. shipbuilding base, which has long lagged behind international competitors.
Moreover, Hanwha plans to deploy these LNG carriers as key assets in bolstering U.S. energy security and ensuring reliable LNG delivery in a geopolitically volatile world. The vessels will also support Hanwha’s internal logistics needs and contribute to the development of a robust U.S.-flagged LNG fleet—thereby reinforcing America’s standing in global energy transport.
Following its $100 million acquisition of Philly Shipyard in December, Hanwha has committed to revitalizing the historic facility, which has been responsible for delivering over half of America’s large commercial ships since 2000 under the Jones Act. Through this effort, Hanwha is not only expanding its North American footprint but also playing a central role in reindustrializing the U.S. maritime sector.
