Hexagon Agility, a leading global provider of natural gas fuel systems and a subsidiary of Hexagon Composites ASA, announced on May 13 a surge in new orders for its natural gas fuel systems designed for trucks powered by Cummins' innovative X15N engine. Over the past few months, the company has secured orders valued at $4.3 million (approximately NOK 45 million) from more than 20 prominent Class 8 fleets in North America.
This latest success propels the total accumulated value of orders received by Hexagon Agility for natural gas fuel systems on X15N powered trucks to an impressive $20 million. This figure includes the substantial order from UPS announced in May 2024 and additional orders disclosed in October 2024, underscoring the increasing adoption of natural gas as a viable and compelling alternative fuel in the heavy-duty trucking sector.
A key driver for this growing momentum is the recent announcement in late April 2025 by Daimler Truck North America that it has officially opened orders for its Freightliner Cascadia trucks equipped with the Cummins X15N engine. This development means that the three leading Class 8 truck Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in North America – Daimler, Kenworth, and Peterbilt – now offer natural gas truck options powered by the X15N engine.
Eric Bippus, Chief Commercial Officer at Hexagon Composites, expressed his enthusiasm about this positive trend, stating, "Despite the prevailing uncertainties in the freight market and the broader macro-economic landscape, we are witnessing a significant uptick in the interest for natural gas solutions. The introduction of the new 15-liter engine (X15N) is proving to be a game-changer, enabling fleets to tap into the substantial benefits of natural gas in terms of fuel cost savings and emissions reduction, all while delivering performance that rivals traditional diesel engines in both power and range."
Bippus further highlighted the capabilities unlocked by Hexagon Agility's fuel systems, noting, "When equipped with a fuel system from Hexagon Agility, Class 8 trucks powered by the X15N can achieve an impressive range of up to 1,200 miles. This extended range has effectively opened up an entirely new segment within the truck market that was previously considered exclusively reliant on diesel fuel."
The availability of the Cummins X15N engine has dramatically expanded the addressable market for natural gas solutions within the North American trucking industry. Previously, out of the approximately 300,000 heavy-duty trucks sold annually, around 100,000 were considered suitable for natural gas. Now, with the X15N offering power ratings up to 500 hp (~370 kW) and torque reaching 1850 lb.-ft (~2500 Nm), there are natural gas engines readily available to meet the diverse operational, haulage, and load requirements of virtually any fleet. This expansion effectively adds an additional 200,000 heavy-duty trucks to the addressable market for CNG/RNG on an annual basis.
