Hexagon Agility has entered into an exclusive three-year global agreement with IVECO BUS to supply compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel systems for the manufacturer's entire portfolio of CNG-powered buses. The agreement further strengthens a partnership that has spanned more than two decades and has already contributed to the deployment of over 10,000 CNG buses across international markets.
Under the new long-term arrangement, Hexagon Agility will provide complete fuel storage systems equipped with its advanced Type 4 carbon fiber cylinders. These lightweight and high-performance fuel systems will be integrated into all IVECO BUS CNG and biomethane-powered transit buses sold worldwide. The agreement covers IVECO BUS operations across Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East, reinforcing the company's leadership in the natural gas bus segment.
Eric Bippus, Chief Commercial Officer at Hexagon Agility, highlighted the success of the long-standing collaboration, noting that the partnership has enabled transit agencies around the world to lower greenhouse gas emissions while reducing operating expenses. He added that public transport operators are facing increasing pressure to improve environmental performance, maintain reliable services, strengthen fuel security, and manage rising costs.
According to Bippus, many transit authorities are now adopting diversified fleet strategies that combine battery-electric buses with natural gas-powered vehicles. This balanced approach allows operators to select the most suitable technology for different routes, operating conditions, and regional infrastructure while supporting long-term sustainability objectives.
Public buses continue to play a critical role in urban mobility, accounting for nearly 48% of all public transport journeys worldwide, according to the International Association of Public Transport (UITP). As governments intensify efforts to decarbonize transportation systems, CNG and renewable biomethane are increasingly recognized as practical and scalable alternatives to conventional diesel-powered buses.
Biomethane, produced from organic waste, offers additional environmental and energy security benefits. Since it can be generated locally, it reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels, supports circular economy initiatives, and, under certain conditions, can achieve carbon-negative lifecycle emissions. These advantages make biomethane an attractive option for municipalities seeking cleaner and more resilient public transportation systems.
The European market continues to witness steady adoption of natural gas buses. According to Transport & Environment (T&E), CNG and biomethane-powered buses accounted for approximately 7% of new city bus registrations in Europe during 2025, with market shares exceeding 20% in countries such as France, Greece, and Italy. Demand is also expanding across emerging economies in Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East, reflecting growing interest in cleaner and cost-effective public transport solutions.
Impact on Chemanalyst Chemical Commodity Prices
The agreement is unlikely to trigger any immediate price movement in major chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst. However, sustained growth in CNG bus production could gradually increase demand for carbon fiber, epoxy resins, engineering plastics, composite materials, and specialty polymers used in Type 4 cylinders and fuel systems. Rising manufacturing activity may also support consumption of industrial gases and metal components. In the medium to long term, stronger adoption of CNG and biomethane transportation could provide modest support to prices of composite raw materials, while the impact on bulk petrochemicals and commodity chemicals is expected to remain limited due to the project's phased implementation.
