A fire incident occurred at a significant refinery project in India’s western state of Rajasthan, but authorities confirmed that the situation has been brought under control. According to official statements from the oil ministry and the refinery operators, the blaze was successfully extinguished without causing any injuries or fatalities. The incident took place at the HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Ltd complex, specifically near the crude distillation unit, which is a critical component of the refinery’s operations.
The fire led to an unexpected delay in the refinery’s planned inauguration ceremony, which was scheduled to be attended by Narendra Modi. The postponement underscores the importance of ensuring safety and operational readiness before commissioning such a large-scale industrial facility. Preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have been triggered by a leakage of hydrocarbons from one of the valves in the system. Hydrocarbon leaks are considered hazardous in refinery environments due to their high flammability, making strict safety protocols essential.
The majority stakeholder in the refinery, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), clarified that despite the fire, the structural integrity of the plant remains intact. Officials emphasized that none of the refinery’s units suffered damage that would compromise their safety or functionality. This reassurance is significant, given the scale and investment involved in the project.
Government authorities have confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported, which highlights the effectiveness of emergency response measures at the site. Additionally, the oil ministry has initiated a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident and to recommend corrective actions. Despite the temporary setback caused by the fire, the refinery is still expected to begin commercial operations in the near future, with earlier projections pointing to a July start date.
