Indian LPG tanker Shivalik reaches Mundra safely under naval escort, easing supply concerns amid Strait of Hormuz conflict disruptions.

The Indian-flagged LPG tanker Shivalik successfully reached Gujarat’s Mundra Port on March 16, marking a significant breakthrough for India amid ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. This development comes during the second week of the escalating U.S.-Israeli-Iran conflict, which has severely disrupted maritime traffic through one of the world’s most critical energy corridors. The Strait of Hormuz accounts for nearly 20% of global oil transportation, making any disruption a major concern for energy-importing nations like India.

The safe arrival of Shivalik was made possible through coordinated efforts involving naval protection and diplomatic engagement. Indian Navy warships escorted the vessel through the sensitive region, ensuring its security against potential threats. At the same time, India engaged in quiet diplomatic discussions with Iran, which played a crucial role in allowing the passage of the tanker despite Tehran’s restrictions on vessels linked to countries it considers adversaries.

So far, two LPG tankers have successfully navigated the strait under similar arrangements, offering some relief amid the crisis. However, the broader situation remains challenging. India is currently facing a shortage of LPG supplies, with reports of households experiencing delays and long queues for cylinder refills. Prices have also begun to rise due to constrained supply.

The disruption has left approximately 22 vessels stranded on the western side of the strait, with nearly 600 sailors awaiting clearance to proceed. Despite these challenges, officials remain cautiously optimistic, as more shipments are expected to arrive in the coming days. The successful docking of Shivalik signals a potential easing of logistical bottlenecks and highlights the importance of strategic coordination in maintaining critical energy supply chains during geopolitical crises.
