Iran has announced the discovery of a major natural gas reserve in the southern Fars province, offering a potential boost to its energy sector despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, US sanctions and damage to energy infrastructure caused by the West Asia conflict.
Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said the newly identified field contains approximately 7.5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas. Based on an estimated recovery rate of 72%, around 5.7 Tcf could ultimately be extracted. The field is expected to have the capacity to produce nearly 1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) for approximately 15 years once commercial production begins.
The latest discovery adds to a series of significant gas finds in Fars province. In October 2025, Iran announced the discovery of around 10 Tcf of natural gas at the Pazan gas field. Despite these resources, Iran's gas reserves remain heavily concentrated in the South Pars field, which accounts for nearly 75% of the country's total gas reserves and is shared with Qatar across the Persian Gulf. South Pars is considered the world's largest natural gas field.
According to the US Energy Information Administration, Iran holds approximately 1,200 Tcf of proven natural gas reserves, ranking second globally behind Russia. However, substantial reserves have not translated into proportional export revenues because of sanctions, limited foreign investment, technological constraints and high domestic consumption.
The latest discovery is particularly important because Iran's energy infrastructure has suffered significant disruption during the conflict. Reports indicate that gas production declined by approximately 230 million cubic meters per day following strikes on energy facilities. Even South Pars was reportedly targeted, forcing Iran to repair damaged infrastructure.
Iran is the world's third-largest natural gas producer after the United States and Russia, but most of its output is consumed domestically. Around 94% of its gas production is used within the country, with households and industries representing major demand centers. Residential consumption accounts for about 41.5% of total gas demand, while industry contributes roughly 36%. Gas also fuels around 85% of Iran's electricity generation.
However, production from the newly discovered Fars reserve could remain several years away. Iran faces shortages of investment, advanced technology and upstream infrastructure needed to develop new fields efficiently. Its ability to monetize additional gas through exports is also constrained, with Turkey and Iraq serving as key buyers.
Despite these challenges, Iran has continued investing in technological solutions to improve production efficiency. Iranian researchers have developed an indigenous smart production-management system that uses artificial intelligence to integrate wells, pipelines and surface-processing facilities and optimize operating conditions.
The discovery therefore provides Iran with significant long-term resource potential, although sanctions, infrastructure limitations and domestic demand will determine how quickly the reserve can contribute to the country's energy balance.
Product Impact
The discovery is positive for Iran’s natural gas supply outlook, but its immediate commercial impact is likely to remain limited because the field may take years to reach production. Once developed, the estimated 1 Bcf/d output could improve domestic gas availability, reduce supply pressure and potentially support additional exports. Greater domestic availability could also strengthen gas-fired power generation and industrial operations. However, sanctions, limited investment, technology constraints and high domestic consumption may delay monetization. Therefore, the near-term impact on natural gas markets should remain modest, while the long-term effect could become more significant if Iran successfully develops infrastructure and export capacity.
