Jordan has issued a new international tender to purchase up to 120,000 metric tons of milling wheat, with offers due by July 15. This follows a recent purchase and a separate tender for animal feed barley, indicating Jordan's active role in the global grain market.
Jordan's state grain buyer has launched a new international tender to procure up to 120,000 metric tons of milling wheat, open to optional origins, according to European traders. The move underscores Jordan's continuous efforts to bolster its strategic grain reserves and ensure national food security in a volatile global market.
The deadline for submission of price offers in this tender is set for July 15. The shipment of the sought wheat is staggered across multiple periods, offering flexibility for suppliers. Deliveries are requested in consignments of 50,000 to 60,000 tons, with possible combinations for shipment between October 1-15, October 16-31, November 1-15, and November 16-30. This structured approach allows Jordan to maintain a consistent supply flow and mitigate potential disruptions.
This latest tender follows closely on the heels of Jordan's previous international tender on Tuesday, in which it successfully purchased approximately 60,000 metric tons of wheat. The consistent tendering activity highlights Jordan's proactive procurement strategy to manage its food supply, especially given its heavy reliance on imports due to limited domestic agricultural output and water scarcity. The USDA forecasts that Jordan's wheat imports are expected to reach 1.15 million metric tons in marketing year 2025/2026, primarily from Black Sea suppliers.
In a parallel development, Jordan also issued a separate tender on Thursday for up to 120,000 tons of animal feed barley, with the same shipment periods as the wheat tender. This dual approach indicates a comprehensive strategy to secure essential grains for both human consumption and livestock, which is crucial for the country's broader food and agricultural sector.
The timing of these tenders is significant, as global grain markets continue to navigate various factors, including geopolitical tensions, climate variability, and shifting trade dynamics. Wheat prices have shown some fluctuations recently. As of July 3, 2025, CBOT wheat futures for July 2025 were trading around $5.47 per bushel. Market participants will be closely watching the outcome of this tender for indications of pricing trends and supply availability.
Jordan's strategic reserves are a key component of its food security policy. Recent reports indicate that the Kingdom's wheat stock covers consumption for ten months, and barley for eight months, with ongoing efforts to further increase storage capacity to over 16 months by establishing new silos.
