Kalmar unveils advanced Gen 2 lithium-ion battery, boosting efficiency, safety, and runtime for electric reachstackers, forklifts, and handlers globally.

Kalmar has unveiled its latest innovation in battery technology with the launch of a next-generation lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery system, tailored for its electric counterbalanced equipment lineup. This new second-generation battery is designed for use in electric reachstackers, empty container handlers, and forklifts. It marks a significant upgrade, delivering improved energy capacity, better thermal performance, and a more consistent operational profile across a broad spectrum of working conditions.

This advanced battery technology is currently available in compliance with European standards, with variants adhering to U.S. and Chinese regulations expected to follow by 2026. The new solution builds upon Kalmar’s earlier Li-ion system, which had already earned customer trust for its efficiency and reliability. However, the second-generation version is engineered to meet the evolving expectations of customers who prioritize safety, efficiency, and sustainability in cargo handling.

One of the most notable features of the Gen 2 battery is its enhanced cell chemistry. This innovation significantly extends the battery’s lifecycle and increases its energy throughput. As a result, users can rely on consistent long-term performance while also benefiting from lower battery replacement costs and simplified operational planning. These improvements contribute to a reduced total cost of ownership, a key factor for operators looking to optimize their fleet investments.

Kalmar’s Gen 2 battery system represents a leap forward in operational performance. For example, in high-intensity applications, such as those involving electric reachstackers, the new battery enables operation for up to 10 hours on a single charge. This extended runtime offers increased flexibility and improved uptime for operations in demanding terminal environments.

Another important enhancement is the battery's improved thermal resilience, which supports stable and safe operation even under extreme temperature conditions. This makes the solution particularly valuable for customers operating in hot climates, where maintaining battery integrity is crucial.

Peter Berndtson, Vice President of Kalmar’s Counter Balanced Product Line, emphasized the strategic importance of this development. “Our second-generation battery is a major step forward in helping our customers transition to fully electric fleets without compromising performance. The enhanced safety, longer lifespan, and improved operating times offer greater predictability and peace of mind when managing operations,” he noted.

Kalmar remains committed to pushing the boundaries of eco-efficient technology in the material handling industry. This new battery solution is part of the company’s broader mission to support customers in achieving their electrification and sustainability objectives, without sacrificing productivity or performance. As environmental concerns and energy efficiency continue to shape industry trends, Kalmar’s next-gen Li-ion battery positions the company—and its customers—on a stronger, greener path forward.
