The world’s first large-scale commercial e-methanol production facility, located in Kassø, Aabenraa, Denmark, has officially been inaugurated and has begun supplying low-carbon fuel to leading global companies.
Developed by European Energy in partnership with Mitsui & Co., the facility is owned by Solar Park Kassø ApS, a subsidiary of Kassø MidCo ApS. European Energy holds a 51% stake in the project, with Mitsui owning the remaining 49%.
The facility supplies e-methanol to major industry players, including A.P. Moller – Maersk, the LEGO Group, and Novo Nordisk. These companies are united in their commitment to adopting low-emission solutions in their operations.
With an annual production capacity of 42,000 metric tons, the Kassø facility is the first in the world to manufacture e-methanol at commercial scale. The plant runs entirely on renewable energy and is located next to the 304-megawatt Kassø Solar Park, the largest solar park in Northern Europe. The facility integrates large-scale renewable electricity generation with carbon capture and utilization technology.
Using biogenic carbon dioxide combined with green hydrogen produced on-site, the facility creates e-methanol with up to 97% lower carbon emissions compared to conventional fossil-based methanol. The fuel is intended to support decarbonization in sectors that are difficult to electrify.
Maersk will utilize e-methanol from the Kassø facility to fuel the *Laura Mærsk*, the world’s first container ship powered by methanol. The fuel will also be used in industrial applications, including plastics manufacturing, where it will replace traditional fossil-based methanol.
The LEGO Group intends to use renewable e-methanol in the manufacturing of specific components, such as cross axles and connectors, while ensuring the same standards of safety and durability. Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk will integrate e-methanol into the production of select products as part of its broader efforts to lower supply chain emissions.
Mitsui has played a key strategic role in advancing the project and expanding its international presence, in line with the company’s Global Energy Transition strategy. The partnership with European Energy is aimed at scaling Power-to-X technologies and promoting low-emission alternatives in hard-to-abate industries.
“The start of operations at Kassø marks a major step in bringing Power-to-X technology into real-world application,” said Knud Erik Andersen, CEO of European Energy. “This is renewable energy in action.”
Takashi Furutani, senior executive managing officer at Mitsui, said, “Kassø exemplifies the importance of international collaboration in scaling low-emission solutions.”
Rabab Raafat Boulos, COO at A.P. Moller – Maersk, called the project “a milestone in our effort to decarbonize shipping.”
Carsten Rasmussen, COO at the LEGO Group, said the partnership highlights “how collaboration and innovation can accelerate progress.”
Dorethe Nielsen, VP of corporate environmental strategy at Novo Nordisk, said the initiative “enables practical steps toward decarbonizing our products.”
