KBR has been awarded a significant Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for the expansion of the Qalhat LNG complex in Sur, Oman. The project is a pivotal step in the Sultanate’s ongoing efforts to increase its liquefied natural gas (LNG) production capacity and meet rising global energy demands, while ensuring that operations remain sustainable and efficient.

Under the terms of the FEED contract, KBR will deliver engineering services for the addition of a fourth LNG train at the Qalhat LNG complex, a facility strategically located in Oman’s Al Sharqiyah Governorate. The new LNG train, with a capacity of 3.8 million tons per annum (MTPA), is part of a broader expansion plan that will enhance Oman’s ability to meet the growing global appetite for cleaner energy sources.

This expansion will not only increase production capacity but will also involve significant upgrades to existing infrastructure, including the addition of utilities, an LNG storage tank, a jetty, and other associated facilities. These upgrades are designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing LNG plant systems, further improving operational efficiency and ensuring the facility’s long-term sustainability.

Jay Ibrahim, KBR’s President of Sustainable Technology Solutions, expressed his enthusiasm about the project, stating, “LNG will play an increasingly vital role in the global energy mix, and we are honored to continue our collaboration with Oman on this critical project. By addressing the energy trilemma of security, sustainability, and affordability, this expansion is expected to significantly contribute to Oman’s energy security and sustainability goals.”

Oman has long been a key player in the global LNG market, with the Sur-based Qalhat LNG complex being one of the country’s most important natural gas liquefaction facilities. The addition of Train 4 at the Qalhat complex will strengthen Oman’s position as a leading LNG exporter, particularly to Asian markets where demand for cleaner energy is rapidly increasing.

KBR’s extensive experience in LNG project development, having designed and constructed numerous LNG facilities around the world, positions the company as a critical partner in this expansion. The firm’s expertise in complex engineering, procurement, and construction services will ensure the successful delivery of the FEED phase, with potential for further involvement in the later stages of the project.

This FEED contract comes as Oman continues to diversify its economy and expand its energy infrastructure in line with its long-term Vision 2040 goals. The Qalhat LNG Train 4 expansion will not only boost the country’s LNG export capacity but will also create job opportunities and support local industry growth, contributing to broader economic development and job creation in Oman.

KBR’s involvement in the Sur LNG Train 4 expansion underscores its ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable, reliable, and efficient energy solutions that meet the world’s growing energy demands. The project is expected to play a crucial role in securing Oman's energy future and further advancing its global energy footprint.
