L&T has acquired land in Kandla, Gujarat, to develop green hydrogen and ammonia projects, strengthening its clean energy initiatives. With U.S. approval for SMR technology transfer and ongoing electrolyser manufacturing, L&T aims to develop in-house technologies, expand globally in EPC services, and contribute significantly to India’s sustainable energy ambitions.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has taken a significant step in its clean energy journey by securing land in Kandla, Gujarat, for the establishment of green hydrogen and green ammonia projects. This development aligns closely with the Indian government's push toward cleaner energy sources, particularly through initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make India a global hub for the production and export of green hydrogen. The government is also encouraging pilot projects to explore green hydrogen’s applications, especially in sectors such as transportation, refining, and heavy industry.
Addressing shareholders, L&T’s Chairman and Managing Director S N Subrahmanyan highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in emerging energy technologies. He stated that L&T has made remarkable progress in two key segments: green hydrogen and small modular reactors (SMRs). With electrolyser manufacturing already underway, L&T enjoys a first-mover advantage in the green hydrogen space, positioning itself as a pioneer in this rapidly evolving sector.
A notable achievement was the regulatory approval granted by the United States Department of Energy, allowing the transfer of SMR technology to India. This approval places L&T among the only three Indian companies eligible to receive this technology, paving the way for the company to play a leading role in the future of nuclear energy in India. Subrahmanyan emphasized that this milestone signals the formal launch of L&T’s SMR initiative, which is expected to significantly contribute to the country’s long-term energy security and sustainability.
While the company has partnered with international firms for its initial green hydrogen and SMR projects, its long-term objective is to indigenously develop proprietary technologies, manufacture key components, and deliver affordable, efficient, and innovative solutions tailored for emerging markets. L&T’s vision includes not only the production of green hydrogen but also the full-scale deployment of infrastructure to support its commercial use.
The land secured in Kandla will serve as the site for constructing green hydrogen and ammonia manufacturing units. Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water, using electricity generated from renewable sources, resulting in zero carbon emissions. Green ammonia, derived from this hydrogen, has various industrial applications and is seen as a critical component in decarbonizing sectors like fertilizer production and marine shipping.
Additionally, L&T possesses strong capabilities in executing engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects globally across the green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol value chains. To consolidate its efforts, the company has already formed a new subsidiary, L&T Green Energy Kandla Pvt Ltd, focused specifically on green hydrogen project development. These strategic moves not only reinforce L&T’s leadership in the green energy domain but also support India’s broader transition toward sustainable and self-reliant energy infrastructure.
