LANXESS launches ISCC PLUS-certified, low-carbon Additin RC 2515 lubricant additive, merging high-performance EP protection with verified sustainable manufacturing.

LANXESS, a leading specialty chemicals company, has unveiled a new, more sustainable version of its well-established lubricant additive, Additin RC 2515, designed for extreme pressure (EP) applications. The upgraded additive is now ISCC PLUS certified, with over 80 percent of its raw materials sourced from renewable or sustainable origins verified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS) framework. This certification ensures full transparency and traceability of renewable inputs, backed by independent audits from accredited organizations, thus providing lubricant manufacturers with reliable sustainability data.

The new version of Additin RC 2515 achieves a 34 percent reduction in product carbon footprint (PCF) compared to the conventional variant. This substantial improvement allows lubricant formulators to enhance the environmental performance of their products without compromising technical efficiency. Furthermore, the additive proudly carries the LANXESS Scopeblue label—an indicator reserved for products that contain at least 50 percent recycled or bio-based content and demonstrate a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional counterparts.

Additin RC 2515 exemplifies how sustainability and performance can coexist. Developed using a mass balance approach, renewable feedstocks are incorporated into every stage of the manufacturing process. The result is a light-colored, low-odor sulfur carrier additive that maintains excellent lubricity and medium sulfur activity—key properties for demanding EP applications. Its low reactivity with non-ferrous metals makes it ideal for lubricants used with brass, bronze, and other metal alloys. The additive’s broad compatibility extends to use in metalworking fluids, heavy metal-free EP greases, slideway lubricants, and industrial gear oils, reflecting its adaptability across various industrial lubrication needs.

This launch aligns with the recent ISCC PLUS certification of LANXESS’s Mannheim production facility, a major site within the company’s global lubricant additives network. The certification reinforces LANXESS’s ongoing commitment to integrating sustainable practices across its manufacturing operations and ensuring that its supply chains meet internationally recognized sustainability criteria.

Commenting on the development, Neelanjan Banerjee, Head of the Lubricant Additives business unit at LANXESS, emphasized the company’s dedication to combining environmental responsibility with high product performance. “With ISCC PLUS certification and the more sustainable version of Additin RC 2515, we are sending a clear message: high-performance lubricant additives and sustainability go hand in hand,” he said. “Our product enables customers to reduce their CO2 footprint while maintaining the quality and reliability they expect.”

Through this initiative, LANXESS continues to broaden its portfolio of certified sustainable additives, helping customers meet the growing global demand for low-carbon, climate-friendly lubricant solutions, and reinforcing its leadership in the transformation toward a more sustainable chemical industry.
