A landmark strategic partnership was announced at the 2025 Shanghai International Carbon Neutrality Expo in Technologies, Products and Achievements (CNE), bringing together global chemical giant BASF, leading battery manufacturer Hefei Gotion High-Tech Power Energy Co Ltd, diversified energy service provider China Gas Holdings Limite, and the innovative battery materials producer BASF Shanshan Battery Materials Co Ltd.
The collaboration, forged during one of the most significant events for carbon neutrality, will focus on four key pillars: joint development of cutting-edge energy storage systems, application of next-generation battery materials, commercialization of energy storage projects across various sectors, and the implementation of robust green energy solutions.
Dr. Jeffrey Lou, President and Chairman of BASF Greater China, emphasized the critical need for collaborative efforts to achieve the "dual carbon" targets and facilitate a green transformation. "We firmly believe that through our strong alliance with Gotion, China Gas, and BASF Shanshan, we will further accelerate innovation in energy storage technologies and the wide adoption of clean energy," Dr. Lou stated. "Together, we will create strong synergies and expedite our common goal of achieving sustainability."
Desmond Long, CEO of BASF Shanshan, highlighted his company's extensive experience and technological prowess in the battery materials industry. With 22 years of dedicated engagement in independent research and development, BASF Shanshan has been a key contributor to the new energy sector, serving both lithium-ion battery electric vehicles and consumer electronics. "We are excited to collaborate with BASF China and our partners in the industry to promote the advancement of a circular economy by fully leveraging each party’s strengths in technologies and resources," Long commented, underscoring the commitment to sustainable practices.
Gotion, a prominent player in the battery market, will take the lead in market development and implementation of this strategic partnership. Qisui Wang, Executive President of Gotion, outlined the strategic focus, stating, "By leveraging the material expertise of BASF and BASF Shanshan, alongside the extensive network resources of China Gas, we will target key sectors such as industrial and commercial energy storage, integrated photovoltaic charging, storage and swapping stations." To ensure effective execution, Gotion plans to establish a dedicated team to develop tailored market strategies.
Minghui Liu, Chairman and President of China Gas, underscored the significance of this partnership for his company's expansion into the new energy sector. He emphasized that this collaboration not only promotes the adoption of clean energy but also pioneers an innovative "energy storage + biomass" model. This initiative is pivotal for China Gas Group's transformation into a low-carbon, intelligent integrated energy service provider. Liu concluded with strong confidence in the alliance, expressing China Gas’s anticipation of working with all stakeholders to build a resilient new energy ecosystem and deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable energy solutions.
