Lithium Americas Kicks Off Building of Thacker Pass Project in Nevada

Robert Hume 06-Mar-2023

Nevada [US]: Lithium Americas Corp has started construction on its Thacker Pass Lithium project in Nevada. This follows the February ruling from a federal court that dismissed claims that the project would cause unwarranted environmental or wildlife damage, thus allowing for construction to commence.

The U.S. President Joe Biden is pushing for less dependence of electric vehicle batteries on Chinese supplies with the proposed mine, which has the potential to become North America's largest source of Lithium. This initiative will provide a much-needed source of clean energy and reduce reliance on foreign sources.

General Motors Co announced in January that it is investing $650 million into Lithium Americas Corp's Thacker Pass Project, which targets 80,000 tonnes per annum of battery-quality Lithium Carbonate production capacity. Major earthworks for the project are expected to begin in the second half of 2023.
