Lummus Technology, a global leader in process technologies and energy solutions, has introduced new analytical services for detecting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as "forever chemicals." These services are designed to accurately identify a wide range of PFAS compounds, aiding water and wastewater operators in assessing contamination levels and tracking the effectiveness of their treatment systems.

According to Rutger Theunissen, Chief Business Officer of Services and Supplies at Lummus Technology, this new capability strengthens the company's ability to support customers in addressing water and wastewater challenges. “With in-house PFAS testing, combined with our existing PFAS destruction technology, Lummus can fully assist customers in tackling these environmental issues,” Theunissen explained. “We are now equipped to detect, assess, and deliver effective solutions to eliminate these forever chemicals, helping our clients remove PFAS in an efficient and sustainable manner.”

The new analytical equipment is housed at Lummus Green Circle Labs in LaPorte, Texas, and can accurately analyze 40 different polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) compounds, detecting them down to parts per trillion levels. This high-precision testing process requires minimal sample preparation, reducing the time needed for analysis and lowering the risk of sample contamination. The ability to detect such low levels of PFAS is crucial, as these synthetic fluorinated organic compounds are known for their persistence in the environment and their potential to cause health issues in cases of prolonged or high exposure.

Since the 1930s, PFAS have been widely used in various industrial applications and consumer products due to their water- and grease-resistant properties. However, these chemicals are notoriously difficult to break down, leading to their accumulation in the environment. PFAS contamination has become a major concern for industries and governments worldwide, especially given the health risks they pose.

Earlier this year, Lummus partnered with Element Six (E6) to introduce scalable solutions for PFAS destruction in water and wastewater treatment. This partnership combines E6’s Diamox™ reactor with Lummus’ electro-oxidation technology and system integration. Together, these technologies have proven effective in destroying both long- and short-chain PFAS compounds. The collaboration aims to provide a comprehensive solution for water treatment operators seeking to eliminate PFAS contamination from their systems.

Lummus’ new PFAS analytical services and destruction technology represent a significant step forward in addressing the persistent challenge of forever chemicals. With this new capability, Lummus is well-positioned to help industries and communities tackle PFAS contamination, offering sustainable and effective solutions to a pressing environmental issue.
