LyondellBasell and Polynt partner to develop marine resins using low-carbon Styrene +LC, advancing sustainability in the boating industry.
LyondellBasell, a global leader in the chemical industry, has announced an enhanced collaboration with Polynt, an internationally recognized producer of specialty polymers and chemical intermediates. The two companies are partnering to develop advanced resin solutions tailored specifically for marine applications, including the manufacturing of boats and yachts. This joint initiative will leverage LYB's innovative Styrene +LC (low carbon) solution, which supports the transition toward more sustainable materials in industrial sectors.
The Styrene +LC product line from LYB is created through a mass balance approach and is certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS system. These low carbon solutions are derived from bio-circular feedstocks, enabling manufacturers to reduce their scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions without compromising on product quality or performance. Francesca Faranda, Senior Account Manager at LYB, emphasized the importance of the +LC offering: “Our +LC solutions provide a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to fossil-based alternatives. They support our customers’ efforts to meet sustainability objectives while delivering consistent product excellence.”
Polynt, utilizing LYB’s Styrene +LC, is developing a new generation of marine resins designed for the construction of high-performance vessels. These resins are engineered to offer exceptional durability, strength, and reliability while simultaneously minimizing the environmental footprint of the final product. This represents a major step toward more eco-efficient manufacturing within the marine industry, which is increasingly seeking lower-carbon alternatives without sacrificing performance.
Maurizio Leonardi, Executive Vice President for Europe at Polynt, highlighted the company’s strategic commitment to sustainability: “Polynt’s approach to sustainable industrial development is central to our long-term vision. We are proactively aligning with market expectations, regulatory demands, and stakeholder interests by driving innovation in thermosetting composites. Through eco-design principles, optimized materials, and circular manufacturing practices, we aim to lead the way in environmentally conscious production.”
Leonardi also praised the strengthened partnership with LYB, noting their shared vision for environmental stewardship and technological advancement: “By deepening our collaboration with LYB—a key long-standing supplier—and engaging with other industry partners and research institutions, we are advancing our technological capabilities while maintaining competitiveness in the market. This approach ensures we are prepared to meet evolving regulatory requirements and can effectively serve the growing demand for sustainable materials across sectors.”
LyondellBasell remains focused on unlocking value for customers and society by enabling the transition to a circular and low-carbon economy. Through forward-thinking solutions like Styrene +LC, the company empowers industries to create high-performing, sustainable products that meet today’s environmental and operational challenges.
