This acquisition will allow Lyten to immediately restart production of BESS and expand its product line to include the world's first BESS powered advanced lithium-sulfur batteries.
Lyten, a supermaterial applications company renowned for its advancements in lithium-sulfur batteries, has announced a significant strategic move with the acquisition of Northvolt Dwa ESS, Europe’s largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) manufacturing and R&D facility located in Gdansk, Poland. This 25,000-square-meter (270,000 sq ft) facility was previously a part of Northvolt Systems. It is set to become a cornerstone in Lyten's global expansion and its mission to deliver next-generation energy storage solutions.
Lyten will immediately restart production at the Gdansk facility and fulfil existing orders to integrate the world's first BESS powered by its innovative lithium-sulfur batteries. This move complements Lyten's earlier acquisition of Northvolt's lithium-metal cell manufacturing facility in the Silicon Valley.
Dan Cook, CEO & Co-Founder of Lyten, expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, "Northvolt’s BESS manufacturing operations are truly world class and are a seamless strategic fit for Lyten as we launch an exciting new chapter for our company. We plan to immediately restart operations in Poland and deliver on existing and new customer orders." Cook highlighted the strong support from the Port of Gdansk and local and federal officials, emphasizing the synergy between Silicon Valley technology and Polish engineering talent.
Lyten's lithium-sulfur batteries possess unique characteristics that make them exceptionally well-suited for BESS applications. These include a broader operating temperature range, particularly in hot climates, enhanced safety features, and the advantage of being manufactured from abundantly available, low-cost materials found throughout the US and Europe. Furthermore, their high energy density and ultra-lightweight properties offer significant benefits for various applications, including commercial shipments for drones and deployments on the International Space Station, as well as selection by Chrysler for its Halcyon Concept Electric Vehicle.
The Gdansk facility, which commenced operations in 2023, is equipped to ramp up to 6 GWh of energy storage manufacturing capacity, with the potential to expand to over 10 GWh in the future. Crucially, the facility is powered by renewable energy and boasts contracted orders extending into 2026, providing a robust foundation for Lyten's European operations.
This acquisition follows Northvolt's review and bankruptcy processes in late 2024, which led to the sale of its Northvolt Systems business unit. Scania, a Swedish commercial vehicle manufacturer, acquired the industrial unit of Northvolt Systems in April 2025. Lyten and Northvolt anticipate closing the transaction in the third quarter of 2025.
