Marco Rubio Reports at Least 10 Hormuz Sailors Dead as Hunger Crisis Worsens

Strait of Hormuz conflict strands 23,000 sailors, causes deaths, disrupts global trade, spikes energy prices, and escalates geopolitical tensions and humanitarian crisis.

The ongoing conflict in the Strait of Hormuz has led to a severe humanitarian crisis for thousands of stranded civilian sailors and significant global economic and geopolitical repercussions. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported that at least 10 sailors have died, with approximately 23,000 civilian sailors from 87 countries trapped in the Persian Gulf and "left for dead" due to Iran's closure of the vital waterway. These sailors are described as "sitting ducks," isolated, starving, and vulnerable.

The crisis escalated following US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28, which prompted Iran to close and mine the Strait of Hormuz. Iran views the strait as under its control and has issued warnings to vessels attempting to pass without its permission, even threatening military action against those that defy its orders. This has led to an effective blockade of Iranian ports by the US, which Rubio has characterized as a defensive operation.

In response to the dire situation, the United States launched "Project Freedom," an operation aimed at guiding stranded commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz. However, this initiative has faced challenges, with only two vessels reportedly passing through so far. Iran has denied claims of US warships passing and has issued "last warnings" to American vessels attempting mine-clearing operations, asserting its full and authoritative control over the strait. There have also been reports of missile attacks, with the UAE reporting Iranian missile and drone attacks, and Iran claiming to have struck a US frigate, a claim denied by the US.

The consequences of Iran's actions are far-reaching. Economically, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of global oil supplies pass daily, has sent global markets into turmoil, driving up prices for oil, gas, and fertilizer worldwide. China, with its export-driven economy, is also significantly impacted by the disruption to shipping. Geopolitically, the situation has heightened tensions in the Middle East, with calls for renewed attacks on Iran and a diplomatic stalemate. Marco Rubio has warned Iran that continued defiance could lead to "growing isolation, economic collapse, and ultimately total defeat," urging them to come to the negotiating table. Despite some diplomatic efforts, including proposals from Iran to reopen the strait under specific conditions, the US has deemed these unacceptable. The US has also sought international cooperation to ensure freedom of navigation in the strait. The shipping industry is severely affected, with thousands of vessels and mariners stranded, facing dwindling supplies and extreme conditions."
