McDermott Wins Up to $750M Subsea Contract for Cyprus Gas Field

McDermott secured a major subsea contract for Eni’s Cronos gas development, strengthening its Eastern Mediterranean presence and deepwater capabilities.

McDermott has secured a substantial subsea contract from Eni Cyprus Limited, a subsidiary of Eni, for the development of the Cronos gas field offshore Cyprus. The award represents an important milestone for McDermott as it marks the company’s first subsea project with Eni and strengthens its position in the growing Eastern Mediterranean offshore energy market.

Under the agreement, McDermott will provide a broad range of services covering project management, engineering, procurement, and installation support for the Cronos gas field development. The company will leverage its integrated subsea capabilities to support the project from engineering and procurement through offshore installation activities.

McDermott said the contract highlights the strength of its engineering, procurement, construction, and installation capabilities in the subsea sector. The company will also deploy its deepwater assets and international project execution expertise to help deliver the development safely and efficiently.

According to Mahesh Swaminathan, McDermott’s Senior Vice President of Subsea and Floating Facilities, the award reflects the company’s technical expertise and ability to provide integrated subsea solutions. He also emphasized the importance of McDermott’s global execution teams and local partnerships in supporting the project.

The Cronos development will be managed by McDermott’s Subsea and Floating Facilities team, with resources drawn from its operations in Houston, Perth, London, and Kuala Lumpur. The project will also receive support from the company’s marine construction fleet, including its specialized deepwater assets.

The contract is classified by McDermott as a “substantial” award, which under the company’s definition represents a contract value between $500 million and $750 million. The size of the award underscores the significant scale of the Cronos gas development and McDermott’s role in its offshore execution.

The project further expands McDermott’s involvement in the Eastern Mediterranean, where offshore gas exploration and development have gained increasing importance as regional countries seek to strengthen domestic energy production and establish new gas supply routes.

For McDermott, the contract provides an opportunity to deepen its relationship with Eni while demonstrating its ability to execute complex offshore projects across multiple international locations. The Cronos development could also create additional opportunities for subsea engineering, marine construction, procurement, and installation work as offshore gas activity expands in the region.

Chemical Commodity Price Impact

The contract is likely to support demand for engineering materials, specialty coatings, corrosion inhibitors, polymers, elastomers, and fabricated steel products used in subsea infrastructure and offshore gas facilities. Higher procurement and installation activity could modestly strengthen consumption of these materials across the regional energy supply chain. However, the direct impact on chemical commodity prices tracked by ChemAnalyst is expected to remain limited because the project is primarily an offshore gas development rather than a chemical production facility. Over the medium term, increased offshore investment could provide incremental support to prices of epoxy resins, polyurethane, protective coatings, solvents, and performance chemicals, particularly if regional project activity accelerates.
