Mitsui Chemicals secures ISCC PLUS certification for ACTCOL™, expanding sustainable product portfolio and supporting biomass use and plastic recycling initiatives globally.
Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. has announced that it has successfully obtained certification under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS framework for its ACTCOL™ product, manufactured at its Nagoya Works facility located in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. This certification, achieved in January 2026, confirms that the company’s product meets globally recognized sustainability standards, particularly in relation to traceability, responsible sourcing, and reduced carbon footprint. The ISCC PLUS certification is widely regarded as a key benchmark for companies aiming to validate the sustainability of bio-based, recycled, and circular materials within their production chains.
The certification of ACTCOL™ marks another step forward in Mitsui Chemicals’ broader sustainability strategy, which focuses on accelerating the adoption of environmentally friendly materials. The company has been actively promoting the use of biomass-derived inputs and chemically recycled feedstocks through a mass balance approach. This system allows manufacturers to track and allocate sustainable raw materials across the production process, ensuring transparency while enabling large-scale integration without requiring entirely separate production lines.
As part of its long-term vision, the Mitsui Chemicals Group has emphasized its commitment to expanding the range of products certified under ISCC PLUS. By doing so, the company aims to support industries in transitioning toward greener alternatives while also addressing global challenges such as plastic waste and carbon emissions. The initiative aligns with increasing regulatory pressures and consumer demand for sustainable products, especially in sectors such as construction, automotive, packaging, and consumer goods.
Among the newly certified offerings, ACTCOL™—a polypropylene glycol (PPG) product—stands out for its versatility and wide range of industrial applications. It is commonly used in the production of flexible and rigid foams, elastomers, coatings, adhesives, and synthetic leather, as well as in civil engineering and construction materials. Its certification under ISCC PLUS ensures that these downstream applications can now incorporate verified sustainable content, enhancing their environmental credentials.
In addition to ACTCOL™, other product categories that are now eligible for ISCC PLUS certification include polymer polyols (POP) and resin premix products. These materials play a critical role in polyurethane systems and other advanced material solutions, further broadening the scope of sustainable options available to manufacturers.
With this latest development, Mitsui Chemicals has expanded its portfolio of ISCC PLUS-certified products to approximately 50 items. This growing portfolio reflects the company’s consistent efforts to integrate sustainability into its operations and product offerings. By increasing the availability of certified materials, Mitsui Chemicals is contributing to improved recycling rates, reduced reliance on fossil-based resources, and the promotion of a circular economy.
Looking ahead, the company plans to continue pursuing additional certifications across its product lines and production sites. This proactive approach underscores its commitment to innovation, environmental stewardship, and collaboration with stakeholders to build a more sustainable future. Through initiatives like ISCC PLUS certification, Mitsui Chemicals is positioning itself as a key player in advancing the global shift toward responsible and circular material usage.
