MTO Prices in India Drop 12.08% Amid Softer Crude Oil and Weak Downstream Demand

Arthur Conan Doyle 26-Aug-2026
MTO prices in India declined during July as monsoon-related weakness in downstream demand and softer crude oil benchmarks pressured the market. Heavy rainfall disrupted construction and exterior painting activities, reducing consumption from decorative and industrial coatings, while weaker manufacturing conditions also affected demand from engineering, rubber, and printing-ink applications. Although fuel and automotive activity provided some support, it was insufficient to offset weakness in major downstream sectors. On the supply side, healthy refinery throughput maintained comfortable MTO availability, while softer upstream crude oil costs reduced production pressure. Downstream buyers remained cautious, purchasing smaller quantities and avoiding inventory accumulation, which strengthened their negotiating position. Looking ahead, the MTO market outlook remains mixed. Seasonal stocking ahead of the festive period and firmer refinery benchmarks could support prices, while comfortable supply and potential inventory corrections may create downward pressure. Subsequent demand recovery could provide intermittent support later in the outlook period.

Mineral Turpentine Oil (MTO) prices in India moved decisively lower through July as monsoon-related demand weakness and a softer regional feedstock benchmark pressured spot markets. Early July saw a sharp reduction in the Mumbai refinery’s basic ex-refinery quotation, which reset the regional MTO reference and encouraged competitive selling. Throughout the month, domestic refineries maintained healthy throughput, keeping supply comfortable even as buyers remained cautious and avoided building inventories. Mid-month softness in manufacturing and persistent rainfall further damped demand, while late-month signals from refiners indicated potential for firmer offers heading into August as market participants prepared for pre-festive buying.

Demand patterns were clearly uneven across end-use sectors, and prices reflected that imbalance. Coatings, including decorative paints and industrial coatings, remained weak as monsoon rainfall disrupted exterior painting and trimmed paint-makers’ production schedules; this was a key factor behind the slide from the previous level to...
