Nanotech Unveils 18650 Lithium-Ion Battery Engineered to Prevent Home and Car Fire

Nanotech Energy has introduced a groundbreaking 18650 lithium-ion battery, setting it apart from conventional lithium-ion batteries by incorporating graphene and a proprietary non-flammable electrolyte. This innovative approach ensures that the Nanotech battery remains resistant to catching fire or exploding under stress, presenting a safer alternative for electric vehicles (EVs), e-scooters, power banks, and various electronic devices.

The widespread adoption of lithium batteries in modern electronics is attributed to their high-power density, allowing for the storage of substantial energy within a compact space. However, conventional lithium batteries exhibit sensitivity to factors such as overcharging, pressure, and heat. The liquid electrolyte used in traditional lithium cells is highly flammable, leading to potential hazards like spontaneous fires when the separator fails to keep the positive and negative elements isolated. Instances of Tesla and e-scooter battery fires resulting in injuries, property damage, and even fatalities have underscored the challenges associated with lithium battery safety. Traditional firefighting methods struggle to extinguish lithium fires, making them a formidable threat to life and property. A recent Tesla fire, for example, required over 36,000 gallons of water over an hour to quell thousands of burning cells. To enhance safety and mitigate the risks posed by lithium fires, it is crucial to ensure that residences are equipped with functional fire alarms, providing an early warning system.

The Nanotech Energy lithium-ion batteries, proudly manufactured in the United States, feature a design that enables operation within a temperature range from -40°F to 140°F (-40°C to +60°C). Significantly, these cells exhibit a non-flammable characteristic up to 356°F (180°C). The versatility of Nanotech's batteries extends to various sizes tailored for commercial users, with Voltaplex, a partnering entity, currently accepting pre-orders for the 18650 variant.

This advancement in lithium-ion battery technology marks a significant stride toward enhancing safety in applications where these batteries are prevalent.
