Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co., Ltd. (“Nippon Yuka”), a subsidiary of the NYK Group known for its expertise in chemical research, development, and the production of specialized chemical products, has announced the launch of BioxiGuard, Japan’s first antioxidant developed specifically for marine biodiesel fuel. The product is set to be available for commercial use starting August 10 and marks a major advancement in sustainable fuel technology within the maritime industry.

The use of biofuel in shipping has been gaining traction in recent years, primarily due to its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Biofuel is produced from renewable sources such as used cooking oil and agricultural products, including various grains. These characteristics make it an attractive option for helping the maritime industry transition toward decarbonized and environmentally friendly operations. However, biofuel presents unique challenges that must be addressed to ensure its reliability and efficiency as a marine fuel.

One of the primary concerns with biofuel is its high concentration of unsaturated fatty acids, which makes it significantly more prone to oxidative degradation than traditional petroleum-based fuels. When oxidation occurs, it leads to the formation of acids and sludge. These byproducts can lower the calorific value of the fuel, thereby reducing engine efficiency and performance. Additionally, oxidized fuel can cause operational issues such as corrosion of metal components, blockage of strainers, and fouling in fuel-cleaning systems.

To counter these issues, Nippon Yuka developed BioxiGuard by closely analyzing the chemical characteristics of biofuels used in NYK-operated vessels. The result is a specialized antioxidant designed to enhance the oxidative stability of marine biodiesel. By slowing down the degradation process, BioxiGuard helps maintain the quality and performance of the fuel over extended periods.

In controlled laboratory tests conducted by Nippon Yuka researchers, the addition of BioxiGuard at a ratio of 1 part per 500 to marine biofuel demonstrated a significant reduction—approximately 50%—in the rate of oxidative degradation when compared to untreated fuel. This finding highlights the product's ability to extend the storage life of biofuel onboard ships and support smoother, more cost-effective vessel operations.

In addition to its antioxidant function, Nippon Yuka is committed to continuing the development of advanced solutions to further facilitate the use of biofuels in marine environments. The company’s ongoing research efforts are focused on overcoming broader challenges associated with biofuel use, ensuring that ship operators can transition to sustainable fuels without compromising on safety, efficiency, or performance.

The introduction of BioxiGuard not only marks a technological milestone in Japan but also underscores Nippon Yuka’s dedication to promoting innovation and environmental responsibility. By addressing a key obstacle in the widespread adoption of marine biodiesel, BioxiGuard plays a crucial role in advancing the maritime industry’s decarbonization goals and paving the way for a greener future in global shipping.
