HHP Five Private Limited, a subsidiary of Hygenco Green Energies Pvt Ltd, officially broke ground on its state-of-the-art Green Ammonia Plant in Gopalpur, Odisha. The momentous ceremony was graced by Mohan Charan Majhi, Chief Minister of Odisha, alongside a distinguished gathering of senior government officials and prominent industry leaders.
The ambitious green ammonia plant is designed for a total production capacity of 1.1 million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA), to be realized in three strategic phases. The first phase, slated for completion in 2028, will see an initial production of 220,000 tonnes per annum (ktpa). This will be followed by Phase 2 in 2029, adding another 220 ktpa. The final phase, commencing from 2030 onwards, will bring the plant to its full capacity of 730 ktpa, demonstrating a scalable growth approach designed to meet both domestic and international demand for green ammonia.
This latest venture builds upon Hygenco's commendable success in the green hydrogen sector. The company had previously garnered attention for commissioning India's first commercial megawatt-scale Green Hydrogen plant, a pioneering project instrumental in supporting the decarbonization efforts of the steel industry. With the Gopalpur ammonia facility, Hygenco is now expanding its clean energy footprint, reinforcing its commitment to a greener industrial landscape.
Amit Bansal, Co-founder and CEO of Hygenco, expressed his enthusiasm at the ceremony, stating, "Building on our pioneering success in green hydrogen, Hygenco is now setting new benchmarks in India’s green ammonia landscape. With this project, we are not only advancing energy self-sufficiency but also unlocking export opportunities that position India as a global leader in green ammonia.8 Our focus remains on delivering cost-competitive, world-class solutions that will help industries decarbonize and support India's vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat."
The project's alignment with India's "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" mission is a key highlight, promising cost-competitive and world-class solutions for industries aiming to decarbonize their operations. The strategic location of the facility at Gopalpur Port offers robust connectivity and access, enabling efficient transition to greener alternatives for various industrial sectors.9 Beyond its significant environmental contributions, the project is also anticipated to generate substantial indirect employment opportunities during both its construction and operational phases, providing a boost to the local economy.
As India intensifies its efforts to achieve its net-zero ambitions, projects like Hygenco's Green Ammonia Plant are crucial. They not only pave the way for a sustainable industrial future but also position India as a formidable player in the global green energy market, particularly in the export of green ammonia.
