ORLEN Doubles Szczecin LPG Terminal Capacity, Boosting Supply Security and Market Position

ORLEN Paliwa, a key entity within the ORLEN Group and a leader in Poland's fuel wholesale market, has announced the successful completion of a significant investment project at its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Terminal in Szczecin. The ambitious expansion, valued at over PLN 150 million, has effectively doubled the terminal’s storage capacity and increased its annual handling volume by nearly 65%, reaching an impressive 400 thousand tonnes of LPG.

Beyond the substantial increase in LPG storage and handling capabilities, the terminal expansion directly addresses the rising demand for seaborne imports of LPG. Currently, maritime terminals account for over 35% of all LPG entering Poland, making this upgrade crucial for accommodating evolving supply dynamics. Recognizing the continued importance of rail transport, the project also encompassed a comprehensive modernization of the on-site rail infrastructure. This included the expansion of the siding to incorporate three additional tracks, the installation of a new railcar unloading station equipped with advanced weighing technology, and the construction of a modern LPG pump station. Launched in 2022, the project was completed within a two-year timeframe, with AGAT S.A. serving as the general contractor for the consortium of Polish companies.

Marek Balawejder, Member of the Management Board, Retail Sales at ORLEN, highlighted the profound impact of this development: "The expansion of the LPG Terminal in Szczecin significantly strengthens ORLEN’s market position by boosting the facility’s handling capacity to 400 thousand tonnes per year — nearly 65% more than before. This upgrade broadens our ability to further diversify LPG sourcing and supports the strategic plan to integrate and bolster our logistics assets."

Marcin Zawisza, President of the Management Board of ORLEN Paliwa, provided further insight into the technical achievements of the project. "A key component of the new infrastructure is the addition of two 75-metre LPG tanks, each with a capacity of 2,100 cubic metres, weighing 400 tonnes, manufactured at the Gdynia Shipyard. These installations have increased the terminal’s total storage capacity to 8,700 cubic metres. Transporting and installing the tanks was by far the project’s most complex logistical challenge."

The expansion is poised to significantly improve propane import capabilities, catering to both heating applications and the production of autogas. In 2024, LPG used in transport constituted nearly 75% of the product’s total consumption in Poland. The remaining volumes served diverse heating needs across the municipal, industrial, and agricultural sectors.
