Petronas and Euglena Partner to Revolutionize Biodiesel with Algae-Based Technology

Euglena Co., a leading Japanese biofuel company, has entered into a strategic partnership with Petronas Research of Malaysia. The companies have signed a comprehensive joint research agreement to develop large-scale production technology for microalgae, a promising source for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and next-generation biodiesel (Renewable Diesel Fuel or Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO)). This collaboration marks a significant step towards advancing sustainable biofuel production and reducing carbon emissions.

PETRONAS Research, a subsidiary of the Malaysian energy conglomerate Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), is embarking on a significant joint research initiative with Euglena Co. This collaboration focuses on advancing technologies for the large-scale production of microalgae, encompassing all stages from cultivation and algae collection to oil extraction and the utilization of by-products like defatted algae. The goal is to develop efficient methods for producing biofuel feedstock. This research supports a broader project involving Euglena Co., PETRONAS, and Enilive SpA, which is set to build and operate a biofuel production plant. The final investment decision for this plant was announced on July 26, 2024.
