PETRONAS and KOGAS have signed an MoU to enhance their long-standing partnership by focusing on clean energy collaboration. The agreement includes commitments to carbon capture, renewable energy, and hydrogen development. It marks a major step in both companies’ efforts to drive global energy innovation and support the transition to a low-carbon future.

PETRONAS, Malaysia’s fully integrated oil and gas multinational, and Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS), one of the world’s largest importers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), have further deepened their long-standing partnership by signing a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement underscores their mutual commitment to promoting innovation and sustainability within the global energy landscape.

The MoU builds upon decades of successful collaboration between the two energy giants, particularly in the LNG sector, and signifies a renewed focus on addressing climate change through clean energy initiatives. While reaffirming PETRONAS’ role as a reliable long-term LNG supplier to KOGAS, the agreement also outlines future cooperation in several key areas: carbon capture and storage (CCS), renewable energy projects, and hydrogen development.

These strategic initiatives reflect the evolving priorities of both companies as they seek to support the global transition toward low-carbon energy systems. The partnership aims to unlock synergies across the energy value chain by combining PETRONAS’ upstream and LNG capabilities with KOGAS’ expertise in gas infrastructure and downstream distribution.

Shamsairi Mohd Ibrahim, Vice President of LNG Marketing and Trading at PETRONAS, highlighted the importance of the renewed collaboration. “This continued partnership with KOGAS represents a key milestone in our relationship that dates back to 1991. It also demonstrates our shared ambition to lead the way in providing innovative, low-carbon, and sustainable energy solutions for the world,” he said.

Since their initial engagement over three decades ago, PETRONAS and KOGAS have worked closely to ensure secure and efficient LNG supply chains. Now, with this MoU, the scope of collaboration is expanding beyond conventional energy trading. The partners are committed to co-developing technologies and infrastructure that support decarbonization goals in line with national and international climate targets.

Mr. Oh Kwon Taek, Senior Vice President of the Hydrogen and New Business Unit at KOGAS, echoed the optimism about the partnership’s future direction. “We believe that today’s MoU represents not only a continuation of our historic relationship but also a new beginning—one where our combined strengths will pave the way for greater innovation and sustainability. This partnership will be instrumental in developing future-ready energy solutions that benefit both companies and society at large.”

The signing of the MoU symbolizes more than just a business agreement—it is a strategic alignment of vision and capabilities in response to the world’s pressing environmental and energy challenges. As PETRONAS and KOGAS move forward together, their partnership is poised to play a vital role in shaping a cleaner, more resilient global energy future.
