Saipem, in partnership with PT Meindo Elang Indah, has secured a significant offshore Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation (EPCI) contract from BP Berau Ltd. The contract is part of the Tangguh UCC (Ubadari, Carbon Capture, and Utilization & Compression) Project, an integrated initiative that includes the development of the Ubadari offshore gas field, enhanced gas recovery through carbon capture, utilization, and storage (EGR/CCUS), and onshore compression facilities. The project is located in the Papua Barat Province of Indonesia and is operated by BP Berau Ltd.

The total value of the contract is approximately $1.2 billion, with Saipem's share estimated at around $1 billion. The Tangguh UCC Project is designed to maximize natural gas production from the Ubadari field while implementing sustainable carbon management practices. Natural gas extracted from the offshore field will be transported to an onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, where a CO2 separation process will take place. The captured CO2 will be directed to an offshore platform and reinjected into the reservoir to enhance natural gas recovery, reducing emissions while improving resource efficiency.

Saipem’s responsibilities encompass the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of three key offshore platforms. These include two wellhead production platforms and a dedicated platform for CO2 reinjection, as well as the installation of approximately 90 kilometers of associated pipelines. The platforms will be fabricated locally at Saipem's world-class facility in Karimun, Indonesia. This yard, Saipem’s largest globally and one of the most advanced in Southeast Asia, covers an area of 1.4 million square meters and employs over 5,000 workers. Its strategic location and state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a marine base and docks, allow for efficient production and deployment of complex offshore structures.

This contract highlights Saipem's expertise in delivering innovative solutions for the natural gas and carbon capture sectors, further solidifying its position as a leader in energy transition projects. By integrating cutting-edge engineering capabilities with advanced technologies, Saipem contributes to sustainable development goals while addressing global energy demands. The company’s involvement in the Tangguh UCC Project also strengthens its presence in Indonesia, showcasing its ability to support local industries through job creation and knowledge transfer.

The successful execution of this project will enhance Saipem’s reputation in the global market for its commitment to sustainability and technological excellence. By combining natural gas development with carbon management strategies, the Tangguh UCC Project represents a significant step toward achieving a more sustainable energy future.

Saipem is a global leader in the engineering and construction of large-scale projects across the energy and infrastructure sectors, both offshore and onshore. Operating as "One Company," Saipem is organized into various business lines, including Asset-Based Services, Drilling, Energy Carriers, Offshore Wind, Sustainable Infrastructures, and Robotics & Industrialized Solutions. The company boasts six fabrication yards and an offshore fleet comprising 21 construction vessels (17 owned and 4 owned by third parties but managed by Saipem) and 15 drilling rigs, with 9 of them owned by Saipem. Focused on technological innovation, Saipem’s mission is to drive “Engineering for a sustainable future.”
