SECI Extends Bid Deadline for Landmark Green Ammonia Tender to June 30

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has pushed the deadline to June 30, 2025.

In a move to facilitate broader participation and ensure robust proposals, the state-owned Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has extended the deadline for bid submissions for its ambitious green ammonia production and supply contract. Originally set for June 26, 2025, the new deadline is now June 30, 2025. This extension provides prospective bidders with additional time to fine-tune their proposals for this significant initiative under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The tender, which was initially issued on June 7, 2024, falls under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Scheme - Mode 2A, Tranche I. Its primary objective is to secure the annual production and long-term supply of 724,000 metric tonnes of green ammonia. This substantial volume is earmarked for 13 identified fertilizer plants located across India, signaling a major stride towards decarbonizing one of the nation's most critical industrial sectors.

As the designated implementing agency, SECI plays a pivotal role in this scheme. The organization is tasked with aggregating the demand for green ammonia from the aforementioned fertilizer plants. Following the competitive bidding process, SECI will enter into long-term offtake agreements with the selected green ammonia producers. These agreements are designed to provide commercial certainty for a duration of 10 years, a crucial factor in attracting investment and fostering the growth of the nascent green hydrogen derivatives market in India.

The shift to green ammonia is a cornerstone of India's broader commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. Currently, a significant portion of ammonia used in fertilizer production is derived from fossil fuels, contributing substantially to greenhouse gas emissions. By leveraging renewable energy sources for hydrogen production, which is then used to synthesize ammonia, India aims to drastically reduce its carbon footprint in the agricultural sector and decrease reliance on imported fossil fuels.

The SIGHT Scheme, under which this tender operates, is instrumental in providing the necessary financial incentives and a stable market environment to encourage domestic production of green hydrogen and its derivatives. The long-term offtake agreements orchestrated by SECI are expected to de-risk investments for green ammonia producers, ensuring predictable revenue streams and thereby accelerating the development of essential green hydrogen infrastructure within the country.

The extended deadline offers a valuable opportunity for companies to submit comprehensive and competitive bids, contributing to India's vision of becoming a global hub for green hydrogen and its associated technologies. This initiative underscores the government's resolve to drive sustainable industrial practices and secure a cleaner, greener future for the nation.
