An ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export unit in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district, India, resulted in the deaths of seven women workers and left over 70 others hospitalized. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, June 21, at a private facility near Periyapalayam, shaking the coastal industrial hub and raising significant concerns about workplace safety.
The leak is suspected to have originated from the factory's refrigeration system, with some reports pointing to a suspected valve failure in a pipeline carrying the gas to the first floor. The highly toxic ammonia gas rapidly spread through sections of the factory, including areas where approximately 120 migrant workers, predominantly young women from states like Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, and West Bengal, were residing. These workers, many in their late teens and early twenties, were off-duty and resting in their hostel rooms when the leak occurred.
The immediate consequences were severe, with workers experiencing extreme breathing difficulties, dizziness, irritation, and some even suffering bleeding from the mouth and nose due to high levels of ammonia (around 300 ppm) in the air. Panic ensued as workers attempted to flee, with many collapsing after inhaling the gas. Of those hospitalized, 58 were women, and several remained in critical condition, with doctors reporting severe respiratory complications, swelling in faces and respiratory tracts, and damage to lungs, necessitating intubation and ventilator support for some.
Emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) with specialized Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) units, along with police, fire, health, and revenue authorities, were immediately deployed to the site to conduct rescue operations and contain the leak.
The incident has triggered a swift governmental response. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay expressed deep concern, ordered a high-level committee probe into the incident, and announced a solatium of ?2 lakh (approximately $2,400 USD) for the families of the deceased. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his condolences, stating he was "deeply saddened" by the accident.
