Shell and KUFPEC announce FID for Mina West gas project in Egypt, boosting domestic supply and regional energy cooperation.

BG International Limited, a subsidiary of Shell plc (Shell), in collaboration with KUFPEC Egypt Limited (KEL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company k.s.c.c. (KUFPEC), has officially announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the development of the Mina West gas discovery. Located in the Northeast El Amriya offshore concession in the Mediterranean Sea, this FID marks a significant milestone in the project’s progression and underscores the shared strategic vision between Shell and KUFPEC to address rising global and regional energy demands.

The Mina West gas field is being developed under a joint venture structure, with the active involvement of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS). The FID is seen as a testament to the close collaboration between the partners and their aligned ambition to deliver value in an expedited manner. The project is expected to contribute notably to Egypt’s domestic gas supply, reinforcing its energy security and supporting its growing energy requirements.

The decision to move forward with Mina West follows a carefully structured and innovative approach to contracting. The project has engaged a world-class Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, and Commissioning (EPCIC) contractor, which is anticipated to play a critical role in ensuring the timely and efficient delivery of project milestones. The contracting strategy adopted reflects the forward-thinking and adaptive nature of the partnership.

Commenting on the development, Mr. Eisa A. Al-Maraghi, Chief Executive Officer of KUFPEC, emphasized the company's longstanding role in global upstream oil and gas ventures. He stated, “KUFPEC has consistently played a pivotal role in advancing oil and gas projects around the world. Our collaboration with Shell in Egypt is a prime example of our commitment to energy cooperation and our continued investments in key strategic regions.”

KUFPEC, as an international upstream oil and gas company, has an established presence in exploration, development, and production activities outside of Kuwait. Being a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, KUFPEC has maintained a robust portfolio and presence across several strategic markets, strengthening its reputation as a reliable and committed energy partner.

The Mina West project is aligned with broader regional energy goals and offers significant benefits not only in terms of production but also in supporting Egypt’s role as a key energy hub in the Mediterranean. The FID announcement marks a new chapter in the operational execution of the project, with all stakeholders aiming to begin the development phase promptly and meet targeted delivery timelines.
