SI Group and Shengxiao Group formed Shengnova Advanced Materials to expand Biphenol production in China, strengthening regional supply for high-performance industries.
SI Group, a global developer and manufacturer of performance additives, chemical intermediates, and process solutions, has entered into a strategic joint venture with Shengxiao Group, a leading producer of liquid crystal polymer (LCP) monomers and specialty chemicals, to strengthen the production and supply of Biphenol in China. The collaboration marks an important milestone for both companies as they seek to address the growing demand for high-performance materials across key industrial sectors while reinforcing regional supply capabilities.
The newly established joint venture, named Shengnova Advanced Materials, is headquartered in Sichuan, China. It combines Shengxiao Group’s existing Biphenol manufacturing facilities and strong presence in the Chinese market with SI Group’s proprietary production technology and decades of expertise in Biphenol manufacturing. By leveraging the complementary strengths of both partners, the venture is expected to significantly increase local production capacity and improve the availability of Biphenol for customers throughout Asia.
Biphenol is a critical chemical intermediate used in the production of advanced engineering materials, particularly liquid crystal polymers (LCP), polyphenylenesulfone (PPSU), and several other specialty polymers. These high-performance materials are widely utilized in industries that demand exceptional thermal stability, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance. Applications span across electronics, automotive manufacturing, medical devices, and various industrial technologies, where advanced materials play an increasingly vital role in supporting next-generation product development.
The establishment of Shengnova Advanced Materials reflects the growing need for localized manufacturing as demand for specialty chemicals continues to rise across Asia. The joint venture aims to shorten supply chains, improve production efficiency, and provide customers with a more reliable source of Biphenol within the region. By increasing domestic manufacturing capabilities in China, both companies expect to enhance supply security while responding more effectively to evolving market requirements.
Guo Xiaozhong, Chairman of Shengxiao Group, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating that the formation of Shengnova Advanced Materials represents an important step in strengthening the company’s position within the specialty chemicals market. He noted that Shengxiao Group has long been recognized as a leading supplier of monomers for liquid crystal polymers, with Biphenol serving as one of its core product offerings. According to him, customers increasingly value regional manufacturing capabilities that ensure faster delivery, stable supply, and improved responsiveness to market needs. He added that integrating SI Group’s advanced Biphenol production technology with Shengxiao Group’s established manufacturing operations would create significant value for customers and support the continued expansion of high-growth industries across Asia.
David Bradley, President and Chief Executive Officer of SI Group, highlighted that the partnership aligns closely with the company’s long-term global growth strategy. He explained that the joint venture enhances SI Group’s ability to competitively supply Biphenol to customers throughout Asia while maintaining production operations at its manufacturing facility in Newport, Tennessee. This dual-region manufacturing approach enables the company to better support both regional and international customers by diversifying production locations and strengthening overall supply chain resilience.
Bradley further emphasized that establishing an additional manufacturing base in China provides SI Group with greater flexibility to meet increasing customer demand while reducing potential supply disruptions. A broader production footprint also enhances the company’s ability to respond to changing market conditions and reinforces its commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality specialty chemical products worldwide.
The collaboration between SI Group and Shengxiao Group illustrates the increasing importance of international partnerships in advancing specialty chemical manufacturing and supporting global industrial development. By combining technical innovation, manufacturing expertise, and regional market access, Shengnova Advanced Materials is positioned to play a significant role in expanding Biphenol production and ensuring a dependable supply of this essential raw material. As demand for advanced polymers continues to accelerate in sectors such as electronics, automotive, and healthcare, the joint venture is expected to contribute to the continued growth of Asia’s high-performance materials industry while strengthening both companies’ competitive positions in the global marketplace.
Impact of SI Group–Shengxiao JV on Biphenol & Related Chemical Commodity Prices
The formation of Shengnova Advanced Materials is a supply-side expansion move, and its near-to-medium term market impact is likely as follows:
Biphenol (4,4'-Biphenol): Increased in-China production capacity will ease regional supply tightness, putting mild downward pressure on Asian biphenol spot prices over the medium term, as import dependency reduces.
LCP Monomers (PHBA, HNA): Since biphenol is a key LCP monomer, improved availability may stabilize or soften prices of co-monomers tracked by ChemAnalyst in the Asia Pacific LCP supply chain.
Phenol (upstream feedstock): Higher biphenol production could incrementally lift phenol demand in China, adding marginal upward pressure — though current phenol prices remain rangebound with balanced supply and subdued demand.
BPA/Bisphenol-related: Minimal direct impact expected, as BPA markets are already pressured by abundant inventories and weak downstream demand, a separate value chain.
Overall, the JV signals bullish long-term sentiment for high-performance polymer intermediates, but immediate price disruption is limited.
